Sonia Kashuk Makeup at Target
Who is Sonia Kashuk?
Sonia Kashuk is a very accomplished makeup expert. Funny enough, one of her first makeup gigs was the music video for “Funky Town”. The makeup artist failed to show up and Kashuk stepped in.
She has worked for fashion designers the likes of Oscar de la Renta and Marc Jacobs. She’s also been a makeup artist for many popular celebrities such as Sharon Stone and Britney Spears. She was a consultant for Aveda for 8 years, from 1989 to 1997. In 1999, she began working on her line for Target. Again…how have I missed this?
Kashuk has also authored two books on beauty. She coauthored Cindy Crawford’s Basic Face with her former roommate, Cindy Crawford in 1996. Then, in 2003, she wrote Sonia Kashuk Real Beauty, a guide to applying makeup and must-have products.
On a personal note, Kashuk was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2006. This was no huge surprise for her since both her mother and grandmother also suffered from the disease. Regardless, it was still devastating and life-altering. Instead of undergoing months of radiation therapy, she chose to have a double mastectomy to “buy peace of mind”. She didn’t want to risk the chance of the cancer returning or even have to worry about that possibility. Now, she’s healthy, happy, successful and an active advocate for breast cancer research. Amazing…
The Line
While promoting “Basic Face” in the late ’90’s, Kashuk realized that many women knew very little about makeup basics. She decided the market was ripe for a quality makeup line at affordable prices. She pitched her idea to Target and the rest is history.
The Products
Brushes
You almost have to fork over a lot of cash to get quality makeup brushes. Not only are Sonia Kashuk brushes affordable, they’re also uniquely useful. I’m really interested in the Crease Brush. I wonder what it is about it that makes it specifically useful for the crease. Scroll over each brush to see details and pricing.

Makeup
In addition to the basics (blush, eyeshadow, lipstick, mascara, etc.), Sonia Kashuk’s line also offers quite a few different items. Each of these is intended to offer easy makeup application for ladies who are makeup challenged, are super busy or who want to simplify the process. I love all of these items, but I’m particularly fond of the Smokey Eye kit and the Face Palette. The Smokey Eye is such an elusive beast. Many women try to master the art and never quite get there. It looks like it’s labeled for easy use. And, the Face Palette is just brilliant! I think I’m going to get one of these to carry in my purse. Even if it’s not something I plan to use every day, how nice to have all of those items (including liner!) together in one place!
Concealer Set, Face Palette, Smokey Eye Kit, Self-Bronzing Kit, Shadow Quad, Lip Glossing Pencil
I am definitely going to make a trip to Target soon to check out this line. I just wish there were makeup artists and samples to help me decide what I need. Like at Sephora… I guess that’s part of the reason the line is so cheap. It might be worth checking out the “Real Beauty” book. There are some on Amazon for $0.39. Crazy cheap!
Have you tried the Sonia Kashuk makeup line? If so, what do you think? If not, are you going to check it out?
