Top 10 Ways to Be a Recessionista

October 27th, 2008 by crystal
Have you heard this new term? As the economy has declined, this term has emerged. It’s basically the new breed of Fashionista. A Recessionista is one who is very knowledgeable of fashion trends and designers, but can’t or won’t spend excessive amounts of money on clothing and accessories. Instead, the Recessionista seeks discount finds and knockoffs. To use another term, the Recessionista looks for ‘Recession Chic’.
So, what’s new, you ask? It’s true, there have always been those of us who have appreciated trendy fashion at discount prices. Before, though, there wasn’t a term for us other than ‘cheap’ or ‘thrifty’. Being a Recessionista is now desirable. I suspect some will even begin to use it as a badge of honor. Spending $2,000 on a purse in these difficult times makes one seem out of touch and insensitive. But finding a lower end purse made by the same designer and priced at $30 at Target makes one seem wise. And, it definitely sounds more glamorous than calling yourself ‘cheap’.
How do you become a Recessionista? If you’ve been reading this site for affordable options and discount finds, I’m sure you already are one! Here are 10 tips for How to Be a Recessionista.

1. Find Designer Lines at Discount Stores

Discount Designer Skirt
Many designers have more affordable lines at discount stores such as Target, Payless and Kohl’s. As the economy suffers, even more are signing on. Though the quality is very different, the clothing and accessories are still very fashion forward and, most importantly, are much more affordable. Read this post about Botkier bags for Target to see how the designer handbags are similar to the discount versions being sold at Target. Other designers who have discount lines are: Anya Hindmarch (Target), Isaac Mizrahi (Target), Vera Wang (Kohl’s), Abaete (Payless), Alice + Olivia (Payless), Lela Rose (Payless), Elle Collection (Kohl’s), Norma Kamali (Wal-Mart), Sigerson Morrison (Target), Dean Harris (Target) and Jonathan Saunders (Target). If you know of others, leave them in the comments!

2. Shop at Consignment, Vintage and Thrift Stores

You can often find great deals on designer clothing by shopping at Consignment Stores in the nicer areas of your city. It helps to know your designers and what the clothing usually sells for. Don’t buy something just because it’s a great deal, though. Make sure it’s something you really like and that it fits you well.
You can also sometimes find great deals on designer clothing at Vintage Stores. The prices on vintage designer clothing are often pretty steep. So, if you find a good deal here, you’re lucky. Instead of label shopping, you’re better off just looking for classic pieces that fit your personal style.
Thrift Stores are great places to find accessories, jeans and layering pieces. Shop in the men’s section to find a great pair of boyfriend jeans that actually fit you.

3. Know When To Splurge

Assuming you can afford it, it’s definitely okay to splurge every once in a while. Just be choosy about your splurges. Spend more on classic pieces that you know you will wear for more than just one season. Spending $200 on an amazing cashmere sweater is fine because you know you’ll wear that sweater for the next 10 winters at least.

4. Shop at Chic Discount Stores

Recessionista Fashion
For the latest trends, shop at stores like CharlotteRusse and Forever 21. These stores always have very affordable prices and carry the latest trends. If you’re in love with a trend, but are pretty sure it doesn’t have lasting power (i.e. Leg Warmers), it doesn’t make sense to spend a fortune on it. Both of these stores have pretty amazing prices anyway, but hitting their sales is so much sweeter. Both have 50% off sales pretty often. Check out their websites for the latest deals. Their trendiest items are often sold out in stores, but can still be found online.

5. Shop at the Back of Stores

When you shop at your favorite stores, make a beeline toward the back of the store first. That’s usually where all of the sales racks are. You can still own items from your favorite stores by finding the great deals hidden at the back. I always do this at Banana Republic, Anthropologie and JCrew.

6. Stay Ahead of the Times

Be familiar with the styles seen on the runways for the next season. The runway shows for next Spring were held in September. This gives you plenty of time to look ahead, know what the trends are and be able to spot great deals on Spring trends.
If you know what’s coming next while you’re out shopping for Fall/Winter clothes and you come across a perfect Little White Dress marked down to $10, you can snag it up and have it ready for your Spring wardrobe. Here are two posts to help inform you of what’s to come: Top 10 Fashion Trends for Spring 2009 and Shopping Fall Sales for Spring 2009.

7. Find a Cobbler

In times of excess, we get rid of shoes that break or get worn down. Instead, take your shoes to a cobbler and have them mended. Depending on what’s wrong with your shoes, this will cost between $5 and $30. Most likely, that’s cheaper than getting a new pair of shoes. Cobblers will also repair and restore handbags. Use this same philosophy with your clothes. Find a seamstress to repair your clothes (or learn to sew!). Most dry cleaners have a seamstress on call.

8. Re-examine What You Already Have

At the start of each season, go through your closet with the latest trends in mind. As the new trends are publicized for each season, we often think we need to head out and purchase the must haves for the season. You might be surprised at how much you already have sitting in your closet. A great example of that is this Fall’s Floral Trend. I’m sure many of us have a floral top or dress from a few Springs back hanging at the back of our closets. Doing this will also help you realize what you can take to your local consignment shop or Buffalo Exchange to get some dough for what you actually do want to purchase.

9. Work Your Accessories

Instead of spending a lot of money on a few pieces of clothing, purchase the accessories that are popular for the season. It’s amazing what a difference accessories can do to make classic pieces appear trendy. For this Fall, adding a great pair of tights to your classic little black dress can make a huge difference. Add some statement jewelry to that look and you’re instantly in style for about $15.

10. Shop Online First

It’s great fun going to the mall for a shopping excursion. But, if you want to compare prices, see all of the sales and discounts and see everything offered by your favorite stores, it’s best to shop online. So, you’re one of those people who wants to touch the clothes first or needs to try things on? Shop online first to determine where you want to go when you get to the mall. Charlotte Russe might have a great purple blazer for $30, but Old Navy has one on sale for $14. Knowing that before you head out prepares you to make informed purchases. We used to shop first, think and regret later. Now, it’s important to think first, shop later and regret no more.

Shopping Fall Sales for Spring 2009

October 13th, 2008 by crystal
Spring 2009 Fashion On SaleNow that the Spring 2009 Fashion Shows are over, we have a pretty good sense of what the trends will be for the season. One-shoulder dresses and tops, white dresses, high-waisted pants, shorts and skirts, ruffles, embellished necks, Bohemian style and see-through fabrics are a few of the styles we’ll see.

Checking out Sales recently, I noticed quite a few items that would work perfectly for Spring 2009. As stores clear out their Summer inventory to make room for Fall and Winter items, it’s a great time to score big on Spring Fashion. Sure, the clothes might sit in your closet for a few months, but you’ll be ready come March.

Sure, I know you’re stocking up on Fall/Winter items right now, but if you focus on finding a few iconic items for Spring now, while they’re on sale, you’ll save big in the long run. I’ve never shopped ahead like this before, but I think I’ll start doing this each season. Especially as things get tighter in this economy!

To get started, check out this post that lists the Top 10 Trends for Spring 2009.

Spring 2009–Louis Vuitton

October 11th, 2008 by crystal
Watching the Louis Vuitton Spring 2009 Fashion Show left us wondering if we were viewing fashion or an art exhibit. Both, I suppose. While every designer showcases their art through the fashion they create, Marc Jacobs held nothing back in this collection. As the models came down the runway, you could see that nothing was left undone…no part of the canvas left untouched. From the earrings, to the shoes, to the bags, to the garments, everything was adorned specifically for the theme of the collection.

Some words to describe the collection:
Parisian–Very Moulin-Rouge-ish with rich colors, netting and a dash of glitter.
Tribal–Leopard skin, large wooden jewelry, feathers
Edgy–When deciding between feminine and edgy, this collection is definitely edgy with sharp angles, dark colors, black netting and lace.
Ornate–Accessories galore! Oversized necklaces and earrings flowed into the outfits themselves. Bracelets were stacked up the arms and adornments hung from handbags and shoes.
Wide-leg Pants
Obi-belted waists
Short Skirts
See-through Fabrics
Metallic
Rich Colors–Red, Cranberry, Blue, Yellow, Black. Not at all what you would expect for Spring.

Amazing, Beautiful, Fabulous

How to Wear Skinny Jeans

October 5th, 2008 by crystal

As we enter another season in which the Skinny Jean is trendy, we’re finding it harder and harder to avoid. More stores have started carrying skinny jeans. They’re affordable and easy to find. And, there are so many different ways to wear them, they’re quite a must-have for the season.

I must admit to being very intimidated by Skinny Jeans when they became popular again a few seasons back. When they were last in style, I was about 8 and could pull them off with my twiggy little body. But, my body’s changed a bit in the last 20 years.
It’s hard to see yourself in a style made popular by Kate Moss and other similarly proportioned ladies. Most of us don’t look like that. Which leads me to the question: Do you have to be skinny to wear skinny jeans? No! Absolutely not. The name is quite unfortunate. When most women don’t even consider themselves to be skinny, why would they choose a jean labeled in such a way? Seems like a big mistake for those trying to market the jeans!

But, let’s remember why they’re called Skinny Jeans:
Different from flared or bootcut jeans, Skinny Jeans are tight throughout the leg, tapering in toward the ankle. The leg openings are ’skinny’.

Skinny Jeans draw attention to your curves. “Why would I want to do that?!” you ask. Because it’s hot…and there are ways to accentuate what you have using Skinny Jeans as a starting point.
Read more for specifics on how to wear Skinny Jeans depending on your body type.

First though, let’s cover the basics: the different types of Skinny Jeans and, generally, what you should wear with Skinny Jeans.

Types of Skinny Jeans

Cigarette Jeans

So, what’s the difference between Skinny Jeans and Cigarette Jeans? Very little and it depends on who you ask. The biggest difference is leg opening: The leg opening on Skinny Jeans gets smaller as you near the ankle. The leg opening on Cigarette Jeans stays the same from the knee all the way down to the ankle. Thus, Cigarette Jeans tend to bunch up a little if they’re longer. Skinny Jeans do as well, but in an awkward way so you want to wear the right length.

Straight-Leg Jeans

Straight Leg Jeans are the classic jean that has never gone away. Usually, there is no stretch to a Straight Leg Jean and, slightly different from the Cigarette Jean, the leg opening stays the same from the thigh down. Less form fitting than the Skinny Jean or the Cigarette Jean.

Skinny Jeans

The ultimate definition of the Skinny Jean is three-fold: Form-fitting, Stretchy and Ankle-Hugging. Remember the slits and ankle zippers of the 80’s? Not only were those cute little details, they also helped create a more snug fit to the ankle while still allowing you to get your foot through the opening.
So, in order of all over snugness, from Most to Least: Skinny Jeans, Cigarette Jeans, Straight-Leg Jeans. Before we even get to a discussion of body types, you can see where this is going. If you have larger thighs, Straight-Legs might be your best bet. If calves are your issue, you might try Cigarette Jeans.

What to Wear

Tops

Because Skinny Jeans are so tight, balance them with a fuller top. Tunics, short dresses, or drapey tops are good. Flatter your figure a bit more by belting the top at your natural waist. In general, tight tops paired with Skinny Jeans are unflattering unless they are hip length or longer. T-shirts that hit at the belt line can work especially if paired with a vest or blazer. If you do that, wear a skinny belt through the loops of your Skinny Jeans.

Shoes

Heels, heels, heels…
Unless you are super tall (in which case you can wear feminine flats OR heels), Skinny Jeans should be worn with heels. Heels make your legs look long and lean. Paired with the Skinny Jean, you’re golden! The classic pointy-toed stiletto works well. Wedges also work. Peep-toes, ankle boots, booties, etc. can also work. Just don’t pair Skinny Jeans with anything too chunky because, like one fashionista put it, you’ll look like you have lollipops coming out of your jeans.
If you don’t want to wear heels, wear a flat riding boot. This is a good combination in general. Especially if you want to draw attention away from problem areas like heavy calves or thighs.

How to Wear Skinny Jeans if Your Trouble Area is…

Calves

If calves are your problem area, consider wearing Cigarette Jeans instead of Skinnies. Cigarette Jeans are wider through the lower leg, leaving more room for your calves. You’ll still get the form-fitting effect through the hips, thighs and butt. If you still feel like the look is problematic, pair with tall boot.

Tummy

If your tummy is the issue, the solution is pretty simple. Any of the three types of Skinny Jeans will work. Find a pair that has a fair amount of stretch in it. Ultimately, though, find the pair that you feel most comfortable with. What matters here is what you pair the jeans with. Go for a loose top with an empire waist. Definitely wear a feminine heel to elongate your legs and appear slimmer.

Butt

Basically follow the same advice as for ‘Tummy’, but pay extra special attention to two things: the pockets on the jeans and the length of your shirt. Make sure the pockets on the jeans are low. They should end somewhere around the area where your butt and your thighs meet to make your butt look smaller. As far as the shirt goes, find one that lands at least at the middle of your butt if not longer. You can also pair your skinny jeans with a short dress. Make sure to find jeans that feel comfortable to you.

Thighs

If thighs are your issue, you might choose to go with a Straight-Leg Jean instead of Skinny Jeans or Cigarette Jeans. Straight-Leg Jeans will be form-fitting in your hips and butt, but will leave more room in the leg area. Also, since the leg opening stays the same, they won’t draw attention to your thighs by clinging to them. The only problem with Straight Leg Jeans is that they often have little or no stretch. You’ll have to find the pair that makes you feel the most comfortable. If you go with a Straight-Leg Jean, you can afford to go a little tighter on top.

No Curves

If you lack in the curve department, the nice thing is that you can wear tight tops and get away with it. The not so nice thing is that you run the risk of looking like you’re 8 years old. To avoid this, stay away from t-shirt tops, empire waist tops, and flats.

This Outfit:

Tall

If you’re tall, your main challenge will be finding Skinny Jeans that are long enough. Specialty cuts are often made in only one length, making it difficult for those who need things longer than the average person. The nice thing about Skinny Jeans is that you can wear boots over them, hiding the fact that they’re too short. The other nice thing is that it’s okay if they’re a bit short. Pair them with a heel that has an ankle strap and it looks intentional!

This Outfit:
long skinny jeans–J Brand Pencil Leg (34″ inseam)

Short

If you’re short, you have a similar problem as those who are tall. Most of these jeans come in only one length. Lucky for you, you can have them hemmed. Only problem is, you’ll lose some of the skinniness at the ankle if you have to cut too much off. Most skinny jeans come with an inseam measurement of 29″. Find a pair that’s not too tight at the ankle. The bunching up is okay as long as it’s bunching and not folding. For this reason, it might be best to find more of a Cigarette Jean. Pair with heels that will make you look taller and longer. If you can get away with it, also go for a long, lean look with your top. A tight-fitting tunic is a good bet.

Shopping for Skinny Jeans

Designer Jeans

Skinny Jeans have been around for a few seasons now and they don’t seem to be going anywhere fast. With that in mind, purchasing a great pair of designer jeans might be worth it. They’ll fit better, you can get the perfect length for your height and they’ll last a lot longer. Still unsure? What about getting a pair of Cigarette or Straight Leg jeans? Then, if the trend does change, you’ll still have a great pair of classic jeans that fit into boots really well.
Keep in mind that little details like zippers on the sides, embellishing, etc. is quicker to go out of style. Keep it simple if you’re going to pay a bunch of money.
Here are a few great designer pairs:

These heels are super fun!
The combination of the classic pump style and the bright orange color are the perfect accessory for a pair of skinny jeans and a basic oxford shirt.
Orange is also a nice contrast to the purples we’re seeing so much this Fall.
Find them at Charlotte Russe for $11.50.

Medium

The basic blazer is a must-have for any Fall wardrobe regardless of popular trends and styles.
This one is neutral enough to be incorporated into many different outfits and is a great deal at only $24.99.
Women: Skinny ankle-zip jeans - cool grey

You already know how popular skinny jeans are this Fall Season.
Knowing that, it’s pretty hard to believe we’re actually seeing some on sale!
These have the iconic 80’s zipper which I totally love. Not only is it an edgy addition, having the zipper usually means they were able to get the leg openings that much skinnier.
