Attention Friends With Rare Shoe Sizes

April 26th, 2011 by crystal

You’re so hip and up with things, you probably already know about this. I’m not sure how I missed it.

When I was at Nordstrom last Friday afternoon, there was something odd happening in the shoe department. Banquet tables topped with shoes were wedged into every open nook and cranny in the shoe department. First, I thought I’d stumbled upon a secret sale of some sort. But then, I started looking closer. The shoes were regularly priced, but the sizes went from 12 and 11 to 4 and 5. Nothing in between. Signs on the table said ‘Over 10, Under 5′. Ah…

So apparently, Nordstrom has these events periodically. SInce the dates are staggered like the tour dates for your favorite band, I’m guessing the shoes make a tour from store to store. There are a couple of dates left on this particular tour, but if you miss them it you can always shop extended sizes online. Nordstrom has the best selection of extra large or extra small shoes in the industry.

Oxford Flats for Spring 2011

March 18th, 2011 by crystal

Though it’s a style that started a few seasons ago, oxford flats (or brogues) are EVERYWHERE this Spring. You may remember them from last year when they were fashioned by the most-daring fashionistas and pegged as the shoe of choice at your local hipster hangout. This Spring, oxford flats are far more accessible for the mainstream crowd as celebrities like Taylor Swift and Kate Bosworth show us how to wear them with more than just skinny jeans.

The Must Have Oxford Flat

The easiest to find, best bang for your buck is Steve Madden’s ‘Trouser’ Laceless Oxford. The heel is relatively flat, they come in a variety of colors (up to 6 from what I can tell) and they’re priced at just under $70. You can probably find this shoe at your nearest DSW for an even lower price.

Not a fan of the laceless style? Check out the other options listed below…

Ways To Wear Oxford Flats

As I mentioned before, the main way these shoes were worn last season was with skinny jeans. Though that’s certainly still an option, consider these alternatives to widen your style scope.

Here’s the basic way – with skinnies. Notice all of the tops are loose and long, the outfit is layered with a cardigan, coat or blazer and the hem of the skinnies hits at about the ankle bone (roll up if you need to).

This is one of my favorite ways to style oxford flats. For a simple chic look, pair your flats with your boyfriend jeans. You can go a little tighter with the top if your jeans are on the baggy side. However, for a look that’s more on-trend for Spring 2011, roll up your skinny or straight-leg jeans for a cropped pant that’s less sloppy than last season’s boyfriend style.

As I’ll mention in a second, one of the main things to remember when wearing oxford flats is to keep your ankle exposed. You can do this in a variety of ways, the easiest by wearing tights or leggings.

If you’re ready to bare it all, wear shorts with your oxford flats. This is a super chic way to add some style to otherwise boring shorts. For an warmer and (arguably) more stylish look, wear tights under your shorts.

How NOT To Wear Oxford Flats

Whatever you do, DO NOT wear oxford flats with –
evening attire
– oxford flats are casual. If you plan on wearing flats with a cocktail dress, go for something more feminine like a ballet slipper. If you really love the oxford look and want to wear it for a night out on the town, choose a heeled oxford instead.
flares, wide-leg or boot-cut jeans – oxford flats will get lost when you cover them up with long, wide hemlines. Keep your ankle exposed to counter the masculinity of this shoe.

What do you think? How will you be wearing oxford flats this Spring? OR – are they still a bit too far on the hipster side for you?

Window Shopping :: My Vegas Fiasco

August 26th, 2009 by crystal
Some of you saw my Twitter post the other day. My grandmother passed away last week. She was an amazing lady who suffered with Alzheimer’s for over a decade. Hers was a long decline that was painful to watch. Though I’m glad she’s at peace, it’s still so difficult to say goodbye to a loved one. Especially when they were as inspiring as Grandma. I have tons of stories and could write many posts sharing those with you. But, this is a fashion blog and in the interest of staying focused, I’ll limit myself (maybe a post later about Grandma’s fashion sense?). First though, let me tell you about the craziness I’ve experienced in the last 48 hours. Through a fashion lens, of course.

What to wear to the airport

The funeral is on Saturday. I wanted to be around family and help my mom out as much as possible, so we caught a flight to Vegas on Monday. Spending time in the Austin, Denver and Las Vegas airports, I started noticing what people chose to wear on their trips. I wasn’t just looking for what was fashionable–I was also noticing who was comfortable.

When you travel, there’s no reason to be less than your regular stylish self. It’s true that sweats are quite comfy (and even sweats can be done well) but they’re not super stylish. If done too slovenly, sweats can look tacky; like you just rolled out of bed.
On the other end of the spectrum, there’s also no reason to dress like you’re off to meet the Prime Minister. It’s easy to find an in-between.

Shoes:

Airports can be quite huge and you never know how much walking you’ll have to do. Thus, wearing stilettos is not recommended. Instead, wear a pair of cute, comfortable flats and bring your stilettos in your carry-on bag.

Jeans:

You’ll be sitting for quite a few hours. Jeans that are too tight or restricting are not a very comfortable option. If you decide to wear jeans, opt for your most comfortable pair (probably a boyfriend jean).

Layers:

Planes can be super hot or super cold. Even if you’re flying from a super hot or super cold location, these temperatures can vary. Wear something short-sleeved and bring a coat or shawl that will easily fit in your carry-on.

Example

The Vegas Little Black Dress

We arrived in Vegas late Monday night. After checking into our hotel, we walked through a couple of casinos. It was that time of night when the first round of clubbers were stumbling to their rooms and the second round was just getting started. After seeing just a few girls, I began to notice a trend. Almost every girl headed to or from a club was wearing a super tight, super short little black dress. The girls on their way to the club were still sober enough to be aware of their dress length. But the ones stumbling away from the club had given up or forgotten that their too short dresses might ride up a little and gave quite a show. I’m not talking about one or even two girls here–this was the case with almost every drunk girl we saw. Seeing this spectacle made me ponder how wearing this ‘uniform’ could be done tastefully.

Fit:

One of the main issues in buying the same type of dress as everyone else is that you’re not taking what fits best on you into consideration. If you find something that is flattering on you, you will look much more stylish than if you choose a dress like everyone else’s that doesn’t fit you well.

Length:

Short dresses are great. They’re fun, flirty and sexy. But, if you have to adjust the dress all night, it’s not the right dress for you. This goes back to fit. Find a short dress that fits you well and stays put.

Example

The girls who looked the most striking and stylish were the ones who strayed from the uniform a bit, found dresses that fit their bodies well and wore them with confidence because they weren’t self-consciously adjusting all night. Here are a few examples of stylish little black dresses. Of course, whether they’re right for you depends on your unique figure.

If you’d rather skip the short hemline altogether, Nordstrom has pretty much each of the dresses pictured in a longer hemline. Search their Little Black Dresses for more options.

Admiring Fall Collections

The next morning, my mom picked us up and we headed to the Fashion Show Mall to outfit Mom for the funeral. We found her the perfect dress and shoes in a relatively short amount of time. While helping Mom, I fell in love with two new Fall collections.
The first is Bobbi Brown’s new cream shadows. They are all metallic, glittery and outrageous!

Fall 2009 Eyeshadow

My other new love is pretty much the entire Fall shoe collection at Nordstrom. My three favorites:

The Fiasco

After all of our shopping fun, we returned to Mom’s car to find it had been broken into and our luggage stolen. All of my makeup, toiletries, clothes and shoes for the week were taken. We did the obligatory freak out, the piecing together of what must have happened and the completion of police reports. And then, we went out to shop for clothes, shoes and toiletries to get us through the week. My parents live 2 hours away from Vegas, so we needed to get everything done in one day (well, actually in half of a day). This included things you wouldn’t even think of like makeup brushes, makeup bags and an actual suitcase. My husband and I were frantically rushing through stores in the mall, trying to find clothes suitable for a funeral and a week in the Nevada heat. Any other time, such a shopping spree would be fun. This was a nightmarish marathon.

I shopped for the funeral first, buying a suitable dress and a cute pair of shoes. I restocked my makeup and face lotions. I bought the necessary intimate apparel. Then, I set out to buy some outfits for the week. Banana Republic’s sale rack was luckily stocked with many great finds in my size. Then, I hit H&M and Old Navy for some inexpensive essentials, DSW for everyday shoes and Target for toiletries, travel bags and suitcases. I was (still am) exhausted and completely overwhelmed.

While it’s nice to have a plethora of new clothes, I keep remembering things in my suitcase that I’m now without. A favorite pair of JCrew trouser jeans that were blessedly long enough (which are no longer available). A yellow polka dot bikini from Victoria’s Secret which was quite flattering. My eyeglasses. The amazing black cocktail dress I had planned to wear to the funeral. Sky high red strappy heels that made me every bit of 6’4″. An amazing makeup bag made from recycled billboard material purchased in a tiny town on the Oregon Coast. My favorite boyfriend tees. Hundreds of dollars of makeup. It all can totally be replaced (except for those jeans). It’s just so frustrating to have it taken and know that since it holds little value for anyone but myself, it will most likely end up in a dumpster somewhere. Double boo…

So, that was my Monday and Tuesday. Phew…thanks for listening (reading).
I’m planning to write this week, but if posts are inconsistent, know it’s because I’m spending time with my family, helping with preparations and remembering a sweet, sweet lady.

Your comments, stories and suggestions are always and especially welcome.

How To Wear Ruffles {and not look like Little Bo Peep}

July 14th, 2009 by crystal
Since last Fall when the ruffle trend first became popular, I’ve heard many women tell me why the trend is just not for them. Most cite body types or certain ‘problem’ areas they feel ruffles draw attention to. But, most cite age. They feel ruffle make them look too young or, sometimes, too old. I understand these concerns and I agree that ruffles, when done incorrectly, can be unflattering for any body type. And, ruffles, when done incorrectly, can make a woman of any age look much younger (or older) than she is. I do, however, think that when worn well, ruffles can accentuate the beauty of every body type and make women of any age look sophisticated and classy. Here’s a lowdown of how to get ruffles to work for you. I think once you find the best way to wear them, you’ll want to wear them all the time!

Ruffles on the Runway

According to style.com, there were 542 looks that featured ruffles in the Spring 2009 runway shows. That should give you an idea of how prolific ruffles were with designers. And, while there were some Little Bo Peep styles, most of them were tasteful and classy.

How To Wear Ruffles

1. Maintain Balance

For those who worry that their body type or ‘problem area’ is not suited to wearing ruffles, the answer is balance. Ruffles add volume. So, if you have large breasts, don’t wear tiered ruffles over them. Instead, choose a ruffled skirt or a one shoulder top that has ruffles at the top of the shoulder. If you have wide hips, don’t wear a skirt that has a huge ruffle at the waist. Instead, wear a ruffled top or a skirt with a ruffle at the hem or down the center. If you have a full body type, wear dresses that have ruffles down the center, not all over.
The opposite is true as well. If you are small breasted, wear ruffled shirts to add volume. If you have a straight body type and want the illusion of curves, wear a dress or skirt that has ruffles at the hips.
Remember, it’s all about balance!

2. Moderation

Ruffles are an accent. Like an accessory, they add a little pizazz to your outfit. But, like accessories, you don’t want to overdo it. If you wear a ruffled top, that’s enough ruffles! Don’t pair with a ruffled skirt and ruffled shoes–you’ll run the risk of looking like a can-can girl. If you wear one piece and still feel like you need to tone down the ruffle-ness of it, top with a blazer or cardigan.

3. Muted Accessories

As I said above, ruffles act like accessories. So, there’s no need to wear a ton of accessories to dress up your look. Wear a cuff bracelet or bangles, a pair of dangling earrings and that’s it. Don’t wear statement necklaces that draw attention away from your ruffles.

4. Pair With Straight Lines

In working to maintain balance in your look, pair ruffled pieces with tailored, tight-fitting pieces. The Elie Saab photo shown above is a great example of what I mean by this. Notice how the full, ruffled top is paired with tailored, tight shorts. If the top was paired with a full skirt or pleated shorts, that model would look twice as big. Too many ruffles and too much fullness can look a little muu muu.
