Fall 2008 Coat Trends

October 8th, 2008 by crystal
I have to admit to being very unstylish when it comes to coats. Living in Texas, there are only about 3 months when I really need a heavy coat. So, I’ve worn the same peacoat for the last 3 winters. Boring!
This Fall, it’s time to get a little more creative than the old trusty peacoat.
Trends for Fall 2008 Coats are much more diverse than in previous years. Whether your style is feminine, edgy, sophisticated or conservative, there’s an archetypal coat especially for you. Some of the trends are actual types of coats. Some concern specific fabrics, details or patterns.
Which one is right for you?

Leather

Fall 2008 Coat

Leather Jackets are always fun (and warm)! Go for Faux Leather and get pretty much the same result for a fraction of the price.
Leather Bomber jackets are the perfect accessory for a Skinny Jeans outfit.
Brown Leather Belted jackets work well with a Western Style outfit.

Bomber Jacket

Shown: Cynthia Steffe (Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week), Bomber Jacket ($29.99), Leather Ladies’ Jacket ($34.99), Leather Motorcycle Jacket ($298)

Trench Coat

The Classic Trench Coat, created and made popular by Burberry, is definitely the biggest coat trend this season. If you have just one coat this season, it should be this one. You can wear it with almost any style. Pair it with a slightly longer dress for a feminine look.

Fall 2008 CoatPolka Dot Trench CoatFall 2008 Coat

Shown: Tommy Hilfiger (Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week), Safari Trench Coat ($39.99), Polka Dot Trench Coat ($32.99), Mike & Chris Trench Coat ($311)

Plaid

Plaid is a very trendy pattern this Fall. Plaid blazers, trenches, capes and swing coats are all easy to find this season. Because of the pattern, this shouldn’t be your only coat. Plaid can’t be paired with everything!

Plaid Jacket

Shown: Ralph Lauren (Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week), Plaid Jacket ($26.99), Plaid Trench ($84), Baby Phat Plaid Coat ($111.75)

Cape

Fall 2008 Coats

I was surprised to see this style on the runways this season. Capes are very classic and have been previously worn mostly by older women. It’s a very sophisticated style that can be a great choice for a dressy event. Just remember that the Cape is not always super warm because it’s so drapey.

Fall 2008 Jackets

Shown: Ralph Lauren (Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week), Nordstrom Cape ($378), Wool Cape ($198), Wool Cape Coat with Belt ($122.50)

3/4 sleeves

Coats with cropped sleeves are a nice way to show off what you’re wearing underneath. Paired with a scarf, skinny jeans and tall boots to attain an edgy look.

Sunner Mayfair Jacket-FINAL SALEWomen: Cropped peplum jacket - gray

Shown: Cynthia Steffe (Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week), Sunner Mayfair ($124.79), Belted Coat ($128), Cropped Peplum Jacket ($78)

Cropped

Like the 3/4 sleeves, this look is a little bit edgier than traditional coats or trenches. The Cropped Coat looks great paired with High-Waisted pants or skirts. Or, if your outfit is centered around a really great belt, wear a Cropped Coat to leave your waist exposed.

Cropped JacketMike & Chris Madison Cropped Trench

Shown: Diesel (Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week), Cropped Jacket ($34.99), Mike & Chris Cropped Trench ($319), Guess Cropped Wool ($89.50)

Feminine

Adding ruffles, bows, pleats or dress-like cuts to coats makes them look very feminine. Just as the edgy look is in this Fall, the feminine, girly look is popular as well. Wear with dresses, tights, peep-toe heels and skinny jeans.

A-Line Button Coat

Shown: DKNY (Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week), A-Line Button Coat ($32.99), Button Ruffle Coat ($78), Pleated Collar Coat ($28.99)

Swing Coat

Swing Coats generally have empire waists and flare out a bit below the breasts. This is great if you are looking for something less constricting around your mid-section.

Double Breasted Swing JacketSwing JacketWomen: Swing coat - true black

Shown: Cynthia Steffe (Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week), Double-Breasted Swing Jacket ($26.99), Swing Jacket ($24.99), Swing Coat ($57.99)

Fur

Okay, so I totally think you need to go faux with this trend for obvious reasons. LOTS of designers used this as an accent in their Fall 2008 collections. Only a couple, however, showed full fur coats.

Shown: Carlos Miele (Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week), Red Fox Jacket ($299), Fur Trimmed Jacket ($199), Juicy Couture ($415.80)

Military

This is definitely my favorite Fall 2008 coat style. Military-inspired coats are usually detailed with brass buttons and are cut very slimly to remain feminine. Wear these coats with skirts, tights and tall boots.

Diane von Furstenberg Smarty Jones Trench Coat

Shown: Moschino (Style.com), Leather Military Jacket ($79), Diane von Furstenberg ($425), Military Trench ($36.99)

What Do You Think?

Are you going to be creative with your outerwear this season? Or, will you stick with the good ‘ole peacoat? Which of these styles are must-haves and which are dispensable?

Botkier for Target

October 6th, 2008 by crystal

Yet another designer has a line at Target. This is kind of old news, but worth discussing since we’re now shopping for Fall bags.
Monica Botkier released her first handbag line in 2003. She’s made quite a name for herself in just 5 years, a favorite among celebs like Angelina Jolie. To celebrate 5 years of designing, she released a footwear line this Spring.
Her design style is reflective of her New York roots. Edgy, urban and downtown, her bags are perfect for trendy ladies who want to show off their cutting-edge fashion style.
The Botkier designer line is priced just below high-end designer labels, making the bags a more affordable option than, say, Chanel.

This Summer, the Botkier for Target line started showing up in stores. All of the purses are priced below $30, represent Fall 2008 handbag trends, and are nice affordable versions of her designer line.

I always wonder what will happen to the actual label when designers create these affordable lines. Does it make the designer bag more or less desirable?
I, for one, love when designers do this because I’m one of those who ends up buying more than one bag for the season. That’s much more doable when the bags are $20 instead of $600!

Read on to see Botkier bags from her designer line compared to the much more affordable Target version! On the left, I’ll show the Designer bag. On the right, the Target bag.

Satchel

On the left is the ‘Bianca Medium Satchel’ sold for $595. Made from goat skin and lined with suede, this bag is very high-quality.
On the right is the ‘Gray Python Satchel’ sold for $19.99. The exterior of this bag is made with PVC plastic. The interior is cotton.

Hobo

On the left is the ‘Gemma Small Hobo’ sold for $675. Made of fine Italian leather, lined with logo lining including a logo plate, this bag is the definition of luxe.
On the right is the ‘Silver Hobo Bag’ sold for $24.99. This bag is also made with PVC plastic and is lined in cotton fabric.

Clutch

On the left is the ‘Gladiator Clutch’ sold for $395. Made with fine Italian leather, turn lock closure and logo lining.
On the right is the ‘Gray Python Clutch’ sold for $9.99. Exterior is PVC plastic, Interior is made of cotton lining.

Shoulder Bag

On the left is the ‘Chrystie Small Shoulder Bag’ sold for $495. Made with leather, a high-quality metal chain and logo lining.
On the right is the ‘Black Python Shoulder Bag’ sold for $14.99. Made with PVC plastic, lined in cotton and a chain strap.

Wristlet

On the left is the ‘Ziggy Wristlet’ sold for $295. Made of leather with logo lining.
On the right is the ‘Rose Wristlet’ sold for $9.99. Made of PVC plastic with a cotton lining.

Overall…

The styles are pretty similar. The designer versions are more classic, which is nice if you’re going to spend that much money on a bag. You’d like to be able to use it for more than just one season.
The materials are the biggest difference. The differences between fine Italian leather and PVC plastic might be the deciding factor for many.

What’s Your Take?

Would you be more likely to buy the designer bag or the Target version? Do you think designer lines for stores like Target jeopardize the designer label?

Accessory Trends–Fall 2008

September 29th, 2008 by crystal
No outfit is complete without killer accessories. Accessories are what set you apart from everyone else…the way you show your individuality and creativity. It’s important to think about which accessories go with each outfit and how to combine (or not) certain accessory trends.
Accessory Trends for this Fall are big, bold and daring. Oversized Jewelry is a must. Statement necklaces, large cocktail rings, enormous cuffs and bangles dress up Fall Fashion.
The most sought after handbags for Fall 2008 are the Clutch, the Satchel and the Chain-Strap Shoulder Bag.
Wondering which color to go with? Any trendy accessory also in the color Purple does double duty trend-wise. Purple is by far the top color for this Fall.
Read about other popular Fall 2008 colors here.
Other noteworthy accessory trends not listed here are: Oversized Rings, Pendants, Cuffs, Bangles and Satchels. And, of course, tights.
Need to know about shoe trends? Check these posts: Purple Shoes, Boot Trends and Must-Have Shoes.

Here’s a list, by no means complete, of Accessory Trends shown with runway inspiration and affordable finds.

Belts

Wide and skinny, belts are a must to create the cinched waist look that’s so popular this Fall. Shown here are two of my favorites for how unconventional they are. I really like the extra wide belt used in the Herve Leger collection. The Steve Madden from Nordstrom is a great example of that style. The skinny belt is not so unconventional, but the way it was worn in the Diane Von Furstenburg collection was: wear your skinny belt over your jacket to create a more layered look.

Shown: Herve Leger by Max Azria (Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week), Diane Von Furstenburg (Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week), Steve Madden ($98), Forever 21 ($6.90)

Gloves

Scroll through pictures from the Fall 2008 Runway Shows and you’ll see gloves in every style, color, and material imaginable. Wrist length gloves are as popular as elbow length, leather as popular as lace, fingered and fingerless, etc. The bottom line is, gloves are in.

Shown: Herve Leger by Max Azria (Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week), Forever 21 ($8.80), Urban Outfitters ($38), Nordstrom ($48)

Chain Purse

Francesco Biasia - Ruby - Chain Strap Clutch (Beige) - Bags and Luggage

Chain Strap Purses always remind us of the classic Chanel bag. The trend this season is not so black and white. Chains on clutches, hobos, and satchels are all desirable.

Statement Necklaces

Large, unique necklaces adorned the necks of models at Fall 2008 shows. Find a necklace that epitomizes your style and personality!

Clutch

Always a feminine, lady-like addision and still a trend for this season: the classic clutch.

Can’t Miss It–Charlotte Russe Sale

September 27th, 2008 by crystal
So, I haven’t seen this advertised on their website or in the paper or anything, but when I was at the mall yesterday, I found this amazing sale at Charlotte Russe. Thought I’d share the good news!

They have clothing marked with colored stickers: Green is $9.99, Red is $6.99 and Blue is $2.99. $2.99!! Really? I saw those prices and knew I wasn’t going to find anything worth buying. But, I was SO wrong. Lots of high-waisted skirts, many cute tops and dresses were on the racks.

Some of the items were a bit summery, but could easily be paired with tights to make them suitable for colder weather. I was coincidentally already wearing tights which made it easy to see how the tunics and dresses could work in my Fall wardrobe.

Lucite Skinny Jeans
Jeans are also on sale right now. There were lots of styles marked down to $19.99 and all of their denim was buy one, get one for $15. I found a great pair of long skinny jeans (pictured). They have some other really cute, trendy styles, too. Unfortunately, I’m so tall the skinny jean was the only style long enough to accomodate my 36″ inseam. But, finding skinny jeans for a tall girl is pretty amazing!

Jewelry was really affordable: buy two items for $8. I found two fun, oversized rings. Very trendy for this Fall.

I think this sale is only in the store. There is a great deal on their website though: 50% off sale items. Check that out if you can’t make it into the store.

Hope you find something! Happy shopping!

Share your finds! Did you find a great deal at Charlotte Russe? Or, are there other great sales going on right now?
