Top 10 Jean Trends for Fall 2009
I’ve intentionally ordered the list from the season’s must-haves with lasting power to those that are fleeting trends. In other words, if you’re only going to buy one or two different trends this season, choose from the top of the list. Those at the bottom are trends that will most likely last only a season or two.
Skinny Jeans
Skinny Jeans have been around for a few seasons now. With each season, they become more wearable with affordable prices and flattering fits. Skinnies aren’t going away anytime soon. In fact, they’re becoming quite iconic as more and more women discover their wearability. You don’t have to be ’skinny’ to wear Skinny Jeans. Worn well, Skinny Jeans look great on any body shape.
In almost any store you visit, you’ll find a few varieties of Skinny Jean. The trick is to find the pair that looks best on you and fits your budget. If you haven’t already read my post on how to wear Skinny Jeans, check it out. I outline how to wear Skinnies and what to wear them with for each body type.

Boyfriend Jeans
Boyfriend Jeans are experiencing the rise in popularity this year that Skinny Jeans did last year. They’re arguably this season’s IT jean, they’re comfortable and it’s easy to find an affordable pair (or adapt a pair you already have). If you’re still unsure about this trend, you might want to read my post from last Fall on how to wear boyfriend jeans. Or, for a more timely read, check out Boyfriend Jeans for Fall 2009.

Boot-cut Jeans
Boot-cut jeans are an old classic that really will never go out of style. Buying a pair of designer boot-cut jeans is a safe purchase as you’ll be able to wear them season after season. They’re so common, we’ve come to think of boot-cuts as the ‘basic’ jean. That being said, you probably already have a closet full of boot-cut jeans. Check out what you already have before considering Fall purchases. It’s easy to forget about the contents of your jean collection over the Summer months.

Trouser Jeans
Trouser jeans rose to popularity a couple of years ago. I wouldn’t consider trouser jeans a trend; they were more of a denim innovation. They are stylish, classy and dressy. Trouser jeans are perfect for those events when you’re not sure if jeans are appropriate, but you don’t think it’s a dressy affair. They’re right in-between and create a very put together look. For all of these reasons, trouser jeans are going nowhere–ever. This is a jean that is here to stay. Finding a well-made pair of designer trouser jeans is totally justifiable.

Grey Jeans
If you like trouser jeans, already own a pair and are looking for another classy, dressed-up jean, Grey Jeans are a great option. Grey Jeans are popping up in a variety of styles and cuts (including ripped and bleached). For Grey Jeans with the most lasting power and the most versatility for your wardrobe, choose a classic cut such as boot-cut, trouser or straight-leg. Unlike trouser jeans, grey jeans are a trend that might not have lasting power. I predict they’ll be around for a couple of seasons and then be gone. Of course, there’s nothing about grey jeans that will make people say, ‘oh, that was so 2009′. Nevertheless, I recommend an inexpensive version.

Flare Jeans
Flare jeans are basically a modern bell-bottom. Fitted through the waist and thighs, they flare out into extra-wide legs. Flare jeans are great to wear with a boho-chic top or tunic. They’re also a nice jean option for plaid shirts.

Zippered Jeans
Most of the following jeans hearken back to styles of the 80’s. Of all the 80’s redo styles, the zipper jean is by far my favorite. Perhaps it’s because I rocked the style so frequently when I was 8. Or, maybe it’s because it’s just super cute. Zipper jeans are also very practical if you’re a fan of Skinny Jeans. It can sometimes be difficult to get super skinny jeans over your heels. Zippers make getting ready so much easier. If you’re not a big fan of the zipper, but do like the embellishment at the ankle, there are also jeans surfacing that have buttons.

Ripped Jeans
Ripped jeans are another ‘here today, gone tomorrow’ trend. They’re so over the top, they might even be gone by next season. If you’re totally in love with the look, I suggest a DIY option. I’m sure there’s a pair of jeans in the back of your closet that you haven’t worn in quite some time. Cut 2 inch strips above the knees and below the knees. Make sure to space your cuts so that they don’t tear too much. Wash your jeans to start the fray and you’re done! If you don’t have a suitable pair of old jeans, find some at a thrift store. Really, I don’t suggest purchasing these unless you just absolutely can’t live without them and have some money to spare.

Brightly Colored Jeans
Brightly colored jeans are super fun! They were quite trendy for Spring and Summer of this year. The popularity has trickled over to Fall fashion, but is fleeting. Colors offered are fewer and more difficult to find. Brightly colored jeans might be popular again next Spring and Summer, so you might get some decent wear from them. After that, though, I predict the trend will be over. Shop accordingly.

Bleached Jeans
A couple of readers have asked about acid and stone washed jeans. Yes, it’s true…they’re baa-aack. Fortunately, they’re not terribly trendy–just a smattering here or there. Similar to both washes and far more fashion-forward for Fall are bleached jeans. Bleached jeans seem very artistic to me and for that, I like them. They’re great for a rocker-chic look or to pair with another denim wash.

Phew! That’s a lot of jeans! What will your jean style be this Fall? Will you stick with a few tried and true classics? Or, will you try some daring new trends? Personally, I’m going to purchase a pair of designer Skinnies, wear my old trouser jeans, flare jeans, boot-cut jeans and boyfriend jeans and try to turn an old pair of jeans into trendy ripped jeans. You’ll be pleased to here that I followed your guide to skinny jeans, and I finally found a pair that fit me and look half decent! I was so proud of myself! I can’t wait to wear them.
Other than that, I usually just stick with what I’ve got since I have a hard time finding jeans (and pants in general) that fit me properly. So I’ll be rockin’ my bootcuts and flares.
