Top 10 Classic Fashion Essentials

October 23rd, 2008 by crystal

It’s time to start taking lessons from our classic fashion icons.
There are quite a few reasons to choose classics over trends. With the economy in such a slump and personal finances feeling tighter, purchasing classic pieces that will have lasting power in your wardrobe is a smart move. Trends are fun, but rarely permanent.
Maybe you’re one who doesn’t like to follow the latest trends. You choose instead to create your own, signature look. Most who have done this rely on classic pieces. Think about Anna Wintour. No one would ever say she is not stylish. But, she definitely has an iconic style–a classic, signature look.
Classic pieces are even important for trendsetters. Adding a touch of trendiness to something otherwise classic can transform your entire wardrobe. Think of classic pieces as your foundation.
Because they have lasting power and are such an integral part of one’s wardrobe, it’s worth it to splurge and get quality pieces that will last as long as possible. But remember, quality doesn’t always mean expensive.

Little Black Dress

Little Black DressLittle Black Dress

Shown: Belted Tube Dress ($28.99), Strapless Knit Dress ($68.00)

The Little Black Dress has been popular ever since Audrey Hepburn wore variation after variation of it in ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’. It’s been a classic ever since. I don’t think we’ll ever have a year where the LBD is ‘out’. It’s definitely something you need to have in your closet. Perfect for a cocktail party, a night on the town or a dressy, formal event, the LBD is versatile. Today’s etiquette even allows little black dresses at weddings!
Go for a simple look here. Adding ruffles or embellishments takes away from the simplicity of this style. And, remember, the LBD works just as well long as it does short.

Black Heeled Boots

Shown: Diba Gill Boots ($73.00), Bandolino Uliana Boots ($148.00), Via Spiga Layla Boots ($324.00)

The classic black boot consists of a tall leg, a heel (usually stiletto) and a simple, slimming shape. This boot is versatile for many reasons. It can be worn with skirts, dresses, over pants or under pants. And since it’s black, it goes with almost everything. Chances are, you already have a pair of these in your closet. If you don’t, they’re a classic you should consider.

Cardigan

The classic cardigan is a great piece to wear with whatever’s trendy each season. Its simple, basic style makes it versatile enough for whatever your style is…preppy, hipster, diva. Find one that’s simple, neutral and comfortable!

Blazer

Shown: Wool Blazer ($98.00), Lombard Jacket ($69.95)

The blazer is such an iconic piece, it appears in pretty much every fashion week but is not listed as a trend. It’s just so classic, it’s not considered ‘trendy’. The style of taking pieces from men’s suit fashions and altering them for women was mostly made popular by Diane Keaton in ‘Annie Hall’. Keep things feminine by layering your blazer on top of a frilly or lacy shirt. Blazers can be dressed up or down and are perfect when the weather calls for an extra layer.

Pencil Skirt

Shown: Belted Pencil Skirt ($19.99), Knit Pencil Skirt ($38.00), Slim Pencil Skirt ($44.00)

Like most of these classic pieces, the pencil skirt is versatile enough for work, a night out or a dressy event. It’s all about what you pair it with.

Leather Tote

The feminine version of the briefcase, the leather tote is the perfect day to day handbag. Choose one large enough to hold your laptop, your makeup bag and your clutch for an easy switch from day to night.

Basic Stilettos

Classic stilettos, especially if they’re black, can be worn with almost anything. Characterized by their pointy toe and stiletto heel, these shoes are a must-have in your wardrobe.

Pea Coat

In terms of outerwear, the Trench Coat is quite classic, but hasn’t been as prolific from season to season as the Peacoat. Inspired by the Navy Peacoat, peacoats are warm, functional and sophisticated.

Cashmere Sweater

The cashmere sweater is a staple for every Fall/Winter wardrobe. Simple and luxurious, these sweaters can be worn with almost anything. Pair with a pencil skirt for a preppy look or pair with skinny jeans for a more trendy look. I can’t think of a better, more comfortable way to stay warm!

Clutch

The clutch is the ultimate ‘after hours’ bag. Keep it during your tote as a wallet during the day. To make sure your clutch has some lasting power, go for one that’s simple and more classic. Choose a neutral color and few embellishments.

I honestly think practically ALL of these are “essentials”. All of these work for a variety of different occasions. And this post reminded me that I still need to get a classic pair of black pumps!

    This is SO helpful! Thanks!!

  3. Anna Says:

Good list, I would also add a great pair of jeans, denim jacket and a good quality white shirt, but not too detailed, keep it simple :)

Anna – SO TRUE! A nice, fitted white oxford shirt is essential as is a great pair of jeans! I opt for a denim button-up over the jacket, but I totally agree with where your head’s at!
