Fall 2008 Fashion Trend: The Belted Cardigan

November 12th, 2008 by crystal
Cardigans are classic pieces and safe bets for any season. This Fall and Winter, though, they are exceptionally prolific. In many styles, they’re the ultimate piece for achieving the layered look that’s so trendy this season. A cardigan is one of those pieces that can be worn many different ways with many different outfits. So, in times like these, they’re definitely a must-have piece for your wardrobe.

Unfortunately, the thing about cardigans is that they can often look a bit frumpy. Regardless of the style, when you wear a cardigan, you risk looking like you either raided your grandpa’s wardrobe or like you’re on your way to a librarian convention.

That’s why the Belted Cardigan is such a great style. It’s a great way to accentuate the natural waist and make the cardigan more a part of your overall look rather then an added layer thrown on haphazardly.

Runway Style

Diane von Furstenberg used this style throughout her Fall 2008 collection. Here are a few looks from the runway show. (Images from Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week)

Among others, Sophia Bush has been spotted sporting this style. Notice how it accentuates her waist and makes this otherwise drab outfit look more feminine and stylish.

How to Wear

This look isn’t hard to pull off. Pretty much any belt will work (see the Urban Outfitters pic below). If your cardigan has buttons, they can be hard to work around. Use a skinny belt to make things easier.
Wear your cardigan with jeans like Sophia. Or, with a dress like the example at the top of this post. If your cardigan is long and thick enough, you can even belt it over leggings and wear it as a dress.
The one thing to remember is that the belt should be around your natural waist…not your hips.
