In this world of sweatshops and outsourcing, it’s rare to find companies that offer quality products and make the world a better place at the same time. When I was told about this company, I was reminded of Tom’s Shoes, another example of altruism in the fashion industry. Each time you buy a pair of Tom’s Shoes, a pair is donated to a needy child.
Though similar in that they are both helping those in need, TDM Design has taken a different, more-lasting approach. They are working to empower through opportunity and respect. Read more to learn about their mission and about their fabulous scarves.
About TDM Design
TDM Design was started by two Michelles–Michelle Baldwin and Michelle Taylor-Spearman. On a trip to Nepal, they fell in love with a specific type of cashmere made from the underbelly of the capra hircus goat. What they soon discovered, though, is that the women who wove the fabrics were living and working in inadequate conditions. So, they decided to do something about it.
When they created TDM Design, they employed local Nepalese women and paid them above-market salaries. Additionally, they offered the women access to education and health care. Working with TDM Design has given weavers and artisans opportunities and empowerment they were not given before. The families of TDM Design’s employees have also benefited. Over 125 children now have access to health care because of the company. Ultimately, the founders would like to build a school. So, when you purchase a scarf from TDM Design, you can feel great knowing you are helping a cause!
About the Scarves
Each scarf is handmade with great care and consideration. Studying the scarves, you can see the high quality craftsmanship of the women who made it. TDM Design offers a variety of scarves in tons of colors. With different designs and thicknesses, you’re bound to find one that suits you!
Masino Scarves

The Masino Scarves are made of silk chiffon with a felted design. These scarves are perfect to be worn year round! Light and airy, the scarf can be worn around your neck and loosely tied at chest level during summer months. If you need a little more warmth, loop the scarf around your neck once or more. Since it’s still fairly warm in Texas, I wore my Masino Due Scarf looped once. With cuffed boyfriend jeans and a plain white long-sleeved tee, it was the perfect accessory! And, you wouldn’t believe the number of compliments I received! I was very impressed with the craftsmanship of this particular scarf. With such a sheer fabric, I expected it to have hems that would unravel easily or that it would snag easily. Neither was the case. The hems are sewn with felt to prevent any unraveling and the fabric is surprisingly durable!
Grande Scarves

I don’t have this scarf, but I think I’m going to have to get one! Measuring 14″ by 72″, this scarf can act as scarf, shawl or small blanket! The cashmere is woven in a basketweave, making the scarf lush, soft and warm. Teen Vogue labeled this scarf a ‘must-have’ last winter.
Yum Yum Scarves

I received this scarf with my Masino, but haven’t tried it yet since it’s still pretty warm here in Texas. It’s supposed to get colder tonight, so I may be breaking it out! I’m very intrigued by the Yum Yum because it’s such a different type of scarf. In describing it to someone else, I called it a ‘leg warmer for your neck’. And, that’s pretty much what it is. TDM Design calls it a ‘neck warmer’ for that very reason! The Yum Yum fits snugly around your neck, attaching with magnetic snaps. It’s super warm and very stylish! Scarves rarely keep my neck warm enough unless I wrap them a few times. And then, they can get bulky and cumbersome. The Yum Yum can be worn unobtrusively. It can also be worn as a layer under another scarf! Made of the same cashmere and woven in a basketweave design, this scarf is super soft.
