Though tulip skirts made their debut in Fall 2008 fashion shows, few retail stores carried them until this Spring. Also seen in many Spring 2009 fashion shows, they’re becoming an increasingly popular alternative to the pencil skirt.

What is a Tulip Skirt?

Tulip skirts are very similar to pencil skirts except for two main differences. They’re wider in the hips and are often a couple inches shorter. Tulip skirts cinch at the waist, balloon out at the hips due to pleats or ruching and then taper back down to the legs. They are usually hemmed a few inches above the knees.

How to Wear Tulip Skirts

Body Type:

Tulip skirts look best on women who have a medium to thin build. The balloon in the hips is very forgiving for those who have wider hips or extra weight in the lower stomach. However, the style should still be loose in that area.

Shirts to wear with Tulip Skirts:

Pair tulip skirts with a short waisted top or a thin knit top that you can tuck into the skirt. The pleating and unique style of the skirt should not be covered. Layering a cropped cardigan or blazer over a tight fitting top is fine, but keep it unbuttoned to prevent bulk and allow the style to be seen.

Shoes to wear with Tulip Skirts:

To elongate the appearance of your legs, wear heels.
If your tulip skirt is casual like the American Apparel knit skirt, wear ballet flats.

Tights with Tulip Skirts:

Tulip skirts can be worn during any season. In the Spring and Summer, bare your legs. During colder months, wear tights in a neutral color or go for a monochromatic look by wearing tights and heels that are the same color as your skirt.
