Spring 2009 Fashion Trend: One Shoulder Tops and Dresses

The one shoulder trend is perhaps the biggest trend this Spring. Though it was also a trend last year, it never quite made it to street fashion. This year, we’ve seen so many celebrities wear the trend well, we’re ready to attempt the style ourselves. It also helps that designers have made the styles more functional for everyday wear. Unlike the lycra one shoulder version of the 80’s, the style is tasteful and sophisticated this time around.
Celebrities Wearing One Shoulder Dresses
Though the style would have been popular regardless, Michelle Obama’s Inauguration gown definitely helped launch this trend. Her dress, designed by Jason Wu, put the style in front of millions of eyes.
Then, in the following month, celebrity after celebrity donned one shoulder dresses for awards shows.

How To Wear One Shoulder Dresses and Tops
Wear when appropriate
Think of one shoulder dresses and tops the same way you do strapless dresses and tops. You wouldn’t wear a strapless top to work or to a conservative event. The same is true for one shoulder tops. One shoulder tops are perfect for going out, cocktail parties or even lunch dates.
Find the right bra
You definitely don’t want your bra straps showing when you wear a one shoulder top. Usually, a strapless bra will work. If not, consider investing in a backless bra or a versatile bra like Victoria’s Secret’s 100 way bra.
Accessorize
One shoulder tops look great with statement necklaces. A bold necklace brings attention to the contrast of your top and your bare shoulder.
Make sure it fits
If the top is in your size, chances are you’ll have no trouble with fit. The one problem area is under the arm on the side without the strap. Make sure it’s not too tight in the front or back. You don’t want muffin top at all, but especially not a lopsided muffin top.
Keep it feminine
One shoulder tops are very feminine. Pairing them with pieces that are not takes away from the style and just looks mismatched. Pair one shoulder tops with pencil skirts, skinny jeans and cropped pants.
Try being creative
You should definitely check out this blog post from thecoveted. She took an old pair of gaucho pants and turned them into a one shoulder dress. I tried the same thing with a pair of black gauchos. Mine ended up looking better as a shirt than a dress. The result was surprisingly super cute! I was just about to thrift my gauchos since they’re no longer in style, but now have a new trendy shirt instead.

WOW, that’s super creative with the pants turned into a one shoulder dress or shirt. I like the style - one shoulder is trendy and sexy. Thanks for the idea
