Fashion Distraction: Anna Sui Fall 2009

Fashion Fall 2009

Like Prada, Anna Sui designed a collection that was completely unencumbered by the current trends and themes we’ve seen from most designers. Sui’s collection was strictly a representation of her latest inspirations and artistic sensibilities.

For this collection, Anna Sui was inspired by the women of the Belle Epoque period in Paris. This time was essentially a renaissance for the upper class, resulting in the creation of haute couture and extravagant, seasonal fashion. Women in the upper classes took great fashion risks as the purpose was to be the most extravagant and avant-garde. Sui’s collection is a modern adaptation of that time, maintaining the folkiness we’ve come to love from Sui but incorporating the frills and feathers of late 18th century Paris.

Themes from the Anna Sui Fall 2009 Collection:

Black Lace
Velvet
Hats
Boots
Tights
Feathers
Ruffles

The overall color scheme was mostly black with splashes of colorful florals and geometric patterns.

I’m a big fan of Anna Sui’s playful style, but I’m not so sure about how wearable it is. When watching her shows, I always feel like I’m watching a parade of my childhood dolls walk down the runway. Perhaps the style would be more palatable for everyday if muted by wearing one piece and fewer accessories.

What do you think? Is Sui’s collection wearable?

In related news, watch for Anna Sui in Target stores this Fall. She’s designed a line that is supposedly based on the Gossip Girl characters. The designs look to maintain the folksiness of typical Anna Sui pieces.

I’ve always loved the playfulness of Anna Sui but I don’t think it’s too wearable in the workplace. I’d love a little dress from this collection for my off hours. The boho-meets-gogo styling is super fun and they seem to be a great way to showcase this seasons fun leggings. I think I could get away with certain pieces for the workplace, but not all.

Yes, definitely. I think you could wear a skirt or jacket, but not both together. And, I think the dresses could work if worn with a conservative blazer and sophisticated pumps.
