Fall 2009 Fashion Week: BCBG Max Azria
I don’t often dislike an entire show, but I definitely think this one was a flop. I just can’t see these designs being worn by the masses or even by a handful of daring celebrities. The inspiration for the designs was the ‘geometric abstraction of constructivism’. Thus, the shape of the clothing was key, often asymmetrical, bold and angular. The clothes modeled in runway shows don’t always fit the super-thin models well, but these just hung shapelessly. I think clothing should work with the wearer’s body to accentuate and make the person look more attractive. The focus of these pieces was only on the clothes as forms of art. The wearer was taken out of the equation, making the pieces drape more like sacks then well-fitted articles of clothing. The gold leggings paired with each design were fun, but did not match the clothing worn with them, distracting from the designs. I will say the last few dresses (the green velvet shown below, for example) were quite stunning and made watching the rest of the show worth it.
Redeeming details from the BCBG Max Azria show were:
lower hip dresses (reminiscent of 1920′s shift dresses)
dolmain sleeves
velvet
broad shoulders
jewel tones
pleats
