Fall 2009 Fashion Trend :: Military Jacket

Also known as band jackets and Michael Jackson jackets, Military Jackets are one of the season’s most sought after trends. Balmain was the first to show these jackets last Spring. At the time, they were mildly popular, worn by the most daring of fashionistas. Before his death, Michael Jackson was seen wearing many items from the Fall 2008 and Spring 2009 Balmain collection–appropriate since the designer was largely influenced by Michael Jackson’s style.
For Fall 2009 though, there were only a few Military Jackets on the runway. Despite that, the style is quite popular. You would think, then, that Military Jackets would be prevalent in stores. Not so. My theory is that Michael Jackson’s death has made the style more popular. And, most retailers purchased Fall items before MJ’s death. So, the jackets are fairly hard to find considering how insanely desired they are.
That being said, the Military Jacket is a fleeting trend. Next Fall, your jacket will most likely be outdated. So, if you are considering the purchase of a Military Jacket (which you should–they’re super cute), I suggest you keep your costs below $100 and find a style that can blend in a bit easier than the obvious Balmain/Michael Jackson jacket.
Here is a guide for how to wear Military Jackets based on runway, celebrity and street inspiration. Make sure to check out the purchasable finds at the end–Military Jackets for any budget.

How To Wear Military Jackets
Now, let’s take the inspiration from above to discuss how to wear Military Jackets.
One thing you’ll notice from all of the outfits shown above is how feminine the rest of the outfit is. Military Jackets are so masculine, they should be paired with outfits that show the wearer’s femininity. Skinny jeans, dresses and tights are all great options. Pairing a Military Jacket with boyfriend or boot-cut jeans will make the look a little bit too militant.

Shown: Citizens of Humanity Shredded Jeans, Steve Madden ‘Trinitie’ Pump, MICHAEL Michael Kors Zip Detail Patent Belt, VS Band Jacket
Skinny Jeans offer a tight, slimming contrast to the broad structure of the Military Jacket. Pair with a tight, solid top and basic pumps to get a look similar to Victoria Beckham’s.

Shown: LA Made Long Tank, Zinc Shiny Leggings, Jessica Simpson Studded Gladiator Sandal, VS Band Jacket
I love this look. Pairing a Military Jacket with shiny leggings and studded heels gives you more of a rocker chic look than Skinny Jeans or a dress will. Make sure to find a t-shirt that hits mid-thigh and accessorize with long necklaces.
How to Wear a Military Jacket #3
For a super feminine look, pair a Military Jacket with a full dress or skirt. For Fall, keep warm by wearing tights and boots or booties.
Military Jackets for Fall 2009
Shown: Bailey 44 Knit Jacket $350, Free People Sweater Jacket $148, BB Dakota Battalion Jacket $79, BB Dakota Marsh Jacket $70, Anthropologie Flight Jacket $148, VS Band Jacket $69
I’m loving this trend. Even though it’s a fleeting style, it’s super cute and the perfect layering piece for leggings, skinnies and dresses this Fall.
What do you think? Will you be wearing a Military Jacket this Fall?

I love that purple jacket you featured throughout the post. I always thought of military jackets as just a touch too masculine for me, but in colours other than black and navy, I might have to reconsider.
