Belt Styles and Trends: Fall 2008

November 13th, 2008 by crystal
To accompany yesterday’s post on the Belted Cardigan, today’s post will focus on belt styles and trends. For each style, I’ll show runway inspiration (Images from Style.com), a variety of examples from your favorite stores and I’ll discuss how to wear it.
The trendiest way to wear belts this season, regardless of the style, is around your natural waist. What if you’re wearing jeans? If your top is longer than the waist of your jeans, wear the belt at your natural waist. If not, wear a wide belt at your hips, but over your belt loops. What if you’re a little thick around the middle? You can still wear belts at your natural waist. This is a very flattering look for you as it creates an hourglass appearance. Go for a wider belt and tighten the belt appropriately to avoid muffin top.
Here are the top styles this season…

Patent

Patent Leather Belt
Patent Leather Belts come in many different colors and sizes. Depending on the width of the belt, wear with a dress, top or cardigan. Patent belts in fun colors add contrast and pizazz to Fall neutrals. Pair a purple patent belt with a gray cardigan to put two of the season’s top colors together.

Ornate Buckles

Ornate Buckles
Ornate Buckles add a nice detail to monochromatic outfit or top. Wear belts that have ornate buckles around your natural waist when you wear little black dresses, gray or brown tops, or your favorite cardigan. When you wear the season’s Western trend, wear your ornately buckled belt around the waist of your boot cut jeans.

Double Buckle

Double Buckle Belts
This is my favorite of the belt styles this fall. This wide belt has the illusion of being two separate belts. The corset style of the belt makes it appropriate only to be worn around the natural waist. Pair with a dress or loose tunic for the best results. This belt is a good choice if you are a little heavier on top. The width of the belt helps to break up the torso and create an hourglass shape.

Skinny Belts

Skinny Belt
Skinny Belts can be worn with pretty much anything. These are the best belts to wear with buttoned cardigans because it’s easy to work around the buttons with a thinner belt. Skinny belts can also be worn with dresses, tunics, sweaters, cardigans or t-shirts. Though the natural waist is the best spot for a skinny belt, you can wear them around your natural waist or around your hips depending on the outfit. If your tummy area is an issue, you might choose to skip the skinny belt altogether because it’s more likely to create a muffin top.

Equestrian

Equestrian Belts
The Equestrian Belt sounds a bit more rustic than it actually is. Just check out the Dolce & Gabbana example. For an all over look, you could pair an Equestrian Belt with Riding Boots, but it’s not necessary. Equestrian Belts are best used over blazers, coats or heavy knits. They can be worn at the natural waist or at the hips depending on the outfit.

Double Wrap Belt

The Double Wrap Belt is an altered version of the skinny belt. Unlike the skinny belt, the Double Wrap Belt is more suited for wearing around the hips. Wear at the waist of your Skinny Jeans. Or, wear over a tunic around your hips.
