6 Wedges for Spring / Summer 2009

Invented by Salvatore Ferragamo in 1936, the wedge heel has seen many iterations over the years.
This season, many wedges were spotted on the runways. Most were uniquely shaped like the Marc Jacobs pair shown here. But, as is usually the case, what was seen on the runways is an exaggeration of what made it to the street. If you’re looking for a crazy pair of uniquely shaped wedges, you’ll have to pay a ton to get a designer pair. Wedges that are affordable and easier to find are toned down versions of the runway styles. Don’t fear though; the styles are still fresh and fun!
Here are the 6 main styles of wedges for Spring and Summer 2009 listed in order of popularity. For each, I’ve shown three of my favorite examples–all priced under $100.
1. Cork Wedges
Cork wedges feature a cork heel with a different material on the upper shoe. Interestingly enough, the cork heel was invented by Ferragamo himself due to shortages of wood, steel and leather during wartime. Cork wedges are the most popular wedge heels this season. Maybe a nod to our current economic state?
Shown: Fergie Quote ($89), Groove Freesia ($45), Jessica Simpson ‘Branco’ ($78.95)
2. Gladiator Wedges
Gladiators are also very trendy this season. Combine them with the popular wedge and you have a definite winner.
Shown: Steve Madden ($79.95), Report ($69.99), Payless ($24.99)
3. Pump Wedges
Not all wedges are sandals. Though this isn’t the most popular wedge style this season, it’s definitely my favorite. This style is slightly dressier, but is still versatile since it’s a wedge.
Shown: Seychelles ($100), Jessica Simpson ($69.99), Seychelles ($79.99)
4. Strappy Sandal Wedges
The strappy sandal wedge is a great Summer accessory. You can wear it with shorts, skirts, dresses and even most pants.
Shown: Steve Madden ($70), Fergie ($89.95), Charlotte Russe ($29.99)
5. Espadrille Wedges
In seasons past, espadrille wedges were the most popular wedge style. Though this style no longer tops the ‘most popular’ list, it is still quite trendy. Espadrilles are perfect for summer dresses or shorts and they’re essential for beachwear.
Shown: Pink Studio ($100), Michael Kors ($97.95), Victoria’s Secret ($48)
6. Detailed Wedges
The detailed wedge style features a design that draws attention to the wedge itself. This can be with embellishments, an interesting fabric or a unique design. As I mentioned above, this typified most of the wedge styles seen on the Spring runways. Here are some affordable options.
Shown: Bandolino ($75), Two Lips ($68.99), Lela Rose for Payless ($24.99)
Now, I want to hear from you. Which is your favorite wedge style?

Hey, great post. I’ve never had wedges, but I think I will buy some for this summer. I liked the most the ones you called “detailed wedges”
