12 Fashion Must-Haves for Spring / Summer 2009
May 20th, 2009 by crystal
As we enter the heart of Spring/Summer, it’s a great time to stop and reflect about which trends epitomize this fashion season.
I don’t usually like Must-Have lists for the way they make you feel you’re not stylish unless you own each and every one of the items listed. So, let me preface this list with a disclaimer. These are the top 12 items I’ve seen the most of this season both on the runways and in real-life. They’re all items that you may already have or for which affordable options exist. Before you go out with a list of items you feel you must purchase for the season, re-evaluate what you already own. Chances are, you already have a few of these since many of these trends are repeats from years past.
You may choose to sport all of these ‘must-haves’ this season, or you might decide that just one is something you’d like to try. Regardless, here’s the list.

Gladiators are the ‘it’ shoe this season. And, the styles have gotten quite creative compared to the basic sandal that was popular last Summer. Read about different types of gladiators here.

LOVE the Little White Dress trend! It’s so perfect for Summer. And, white dresses are not just for picnics at the park. Maxi, cocktail and evening gowns are perfect for the trend as well. Read more about the white dress trend here.

Though they were quite extreme on the runways, wearable wedges are popping up everywhere this season. There are so many different varieties, you can definitely find a pair (or a few) to fit your style. For different types of wedges, read my recent wedge post.

Bermudas were definitely the ‘it’ short last Summer. This year, the pleated short is definitely the top pick for the season’s most popular short. For more short styles, read this post.

Tulip skirts are great because they can be super trendy and sexy or conservative enough for the work-place. They’re pretty much this season’s version of the pencil skirt. For more inspirations, check out this post.

LOVE this style! One-shoulder tops and dresses were seen in almost every Spring runway show. And, the good news is they were also very prolific in Fall 2009 shows. This style isn’t going away anytime soon, so it’s safe to purchase a couple of options. For more, check out this post.

The maxi-dress is back for another season. Find one that grazes the tops of your feet or even the ground. Perfect worn with gladiators, maxis are an elegant variation of the Summer sundress. Zephyr at College Fashion wrote a great post about maxis here.

Super popular last Fall, ruffle tops (and dresses) are back for Spring and Summer. No need for layers this time! There are plenty of sleeveless tops that are perfect paired with tulip skirts, pencil skirts, pleated shorts, skinnies, etc.

This trend has just sort of popped up out of nowhere. I’m really not sure where it started, who made it trendy, or from where the inspiration was derived. But, I LOVE it! Urban Outfitters has tons of super fun flower and feather headbands and hair accessories. This is a great addition to an otherwise neutral outfit. Or, a great accessory to cheer you (and those around you) up on a rainy day.

In the spirit of boyfriend jeans, boyfriend blazers are being worn much more often. You don’t have to purchase a blazer to achieve this look. Raid your husband’s, boyfriend’s, brother’s or dad’s closet first! I can almost always find something amazingly vintage and cute when I raid my dad’s closet! If that doesn’t work, there are plenty of options for purchase. And, they’re much more fitted for a feminine physique.

The cardigan that was so popular last Fall didn’t go away when the weather warmed. Instead, the sleeves just got a bit shorter. For more on the Short-Sleeved Cardigan, read this post.

Jumpsuits are such a surprising trend this Spring/Summer. When shown on the runways, many thought they’d be a fad that didn’t make it to street fashion. They’ve been huge in stores though! Express has had a difficult time keeping them in stock, they’re so popular. For more on jumpsuits, rompers and playsuits, check out this post.
