Watching the Louis Vuitton Spring 2009 Fashion Show left us wondering if we were viewing fashion or an art exhibit. Both, I suppose. While every designer showcases their art through the fashion they create, Marc Jacobs held nothing back in this collection. As the models came down the runway, you could see that nothing was left undone…no part of the canvas left untouched. From the earrings, to the shoes, to the bags, to the garments, everything was adorned specifically for the theme of the collection.
Some words to describe the collection: Parisian–Very Moulin-Rouge-ish with rich colors, netting and a dash of glitter. Tribal–Leopard skin, large wooden jewelry, feathers Edgy–When deciding between feminine and edgy, this collection is definitely edgy with sharp angles, dark colors, black netting and lace. Ornate–Accessories galore! Oversized necklaces and earrings flowed into the outfits themselves. Bracelets were stacked up the arms and adornments hung from handbags and shoes. Wide-leg Pants Obi-belted waists Short Skirts See-through Fabrics Metallic Rich Colors–Red, Cranberry, Blue, Yellow, Black. Not at all what you would expect for Spring.

What do you think of the Spring 2009 Louis Vuitton Collection?
After spending days watching all of the shows from the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York, I began to notice some recurring themes. Here are the Top 10 Fashion Trends for next Spring (in no particular order). We are going to have so much fun next Spring!
Asymmetrical Dresses & Blouses
Almost every designer had some version of this, usually in the form of a flowy dress but often as a top or fitted dress.

White Dress
Definitely not replacing the ‘Little Black Dress’, the White Dress is a huge trend for this Spring. Instead of the simplicity and versatility of the LBD, though, the White Dress is a more glamorous pick in ruffles, maxi-lengths and sheer fabrics. Think Goddess!

High-Waisted Skirts, Pants, & Shorts
The cinched waist was a big trend in general, but the main way it was achieved was with high-waisted bottoms. Simple lines help achieve this look and create a very feminine silhouette.

Pantsuits & Shortsuits
We haven’t really seen these since the late 80’s, but here they are again and much more stylish this time! Keep it simple and a tad drapey and you’re good.

See-Through, Sheer Fabrics
Seen in everything from evening gowns, to wear-to-work blouses, see-through material is a big trend for this Spring. Seen on the runway, these pieces were not made conservative with layers or undergarments. For the real world, though, a slip or light tank would be more appropriate.

Harem Pants
Harem Pants were surprisingly prevalent on the runways last week. Paired with belts, chunky heels, and drapy tops makes them a little more conceivable.

Cleopatra-Inspired
While asymmetrical dresses and harem pants are also in this vein, many designers used jeweled-necklines and other accents that harken back to the the days of Cleopatra. Check out the shows from Ralph Lauren, Naeem Khan, Zac Posen, and Monique Lhullier for some good examples.

Bohemian Style (Hippie Chic)
Bohemian Style was a big hit with a few designers. And, many designers had this look going in at least one of their styles. Think peasant blouses, flowery prints, loose-fitting, etc. The best way to pull this off this Spring is to pair a bohemian styled piece with something a bit more conservative like a biege skirt or vest.

Color
Color is a huge consideration for pieces this Spring. So much so that it should be listed as a trend in and of itself. Bright colors were seen at Fashion Week including lemon yellows, neon oranges, chartreuse, fuschia and bright blues. Black and white are a staple and were present as well as neutrals such as tans and greys. Muted brights such as mint-green and coral are also big. Check out this post at collegefashion for a discussion of the Pantone list of colors for Spring Fashion.

Ruffles & Bows
Ruffles and bows dressed up simple silhouettes in the Spring 2009 Collections. Look for bows at the shoulders and hips and ruffles at hemlines.

The spotlight on Zac Posen’s Spring 2009 Collection was almost lost to the sheer number of celebrities in the audience. Try to find images and you’re hard-pressed to find images of the actual collection. Instead, you find Bette Midler, Anna Wintour, Claire Danes, the Williams sisters, Juliette Lewis, Jada Pinkett-Smith…the list continues.
If the clothes weren’t enough to impress me (which they were), the theater of the show was. Fast-paced and upbeat, the show was very well-timed and ordered. The color palette seemed to order the show, beginning with pale yellows, blues, pinks and corals and ending with black. Here’s what I saw:
ruffles
asymmetrical dresses
animal print
jeweled accents
uneven hems
short skirt & long jacket
white dress
metallics
cropped pants
The Chris Han Spring 2009 Collection featured many classic, timeless pieces. So classic was the show, only a few characteristics distinguished it as ‘Spring 2009′: a pantsuit, lots of draping layers, a white dress, the color chartreuse. The wear to work separates were very sophisticated. My favorite part, though, was the 2 evening dresses at the end. I think we’ll definitely see at least one of these (if not both) on celebs this Spring.
Unlike most, Rebecca Taylor’s Spring 2009 Collection really is ‘ready to wear’. Very hippie chic. Lots of peasant blouses or dresses paired with conservative blazers. All worn with ankle boots (and maybe socks with heels?? did anyone else see that?). White was a big color in this collection. Plus, more ruffles and a couple asymmetrical dresses.
