How To Wear False Eyelashes

Though quite popular in the 60′s, false lashes have been reserved for models, celebrities and special occasions ever since. Lately, they’ve experienced a revival in popularity.
Major makeup lines are selling them in a variety of styles ranging from everyday-wear to all out glam. Read more for inspiration, controversy, application steps and where to buy.
False Eyelash Inspiration
False Eyelashes from History

In addition to her slender frame, Twiggy was known for her super long lashes. Of course, she had a little help. Twiggy wore false lashes on both her top and bottom lids. Occasionally, she wore only bottom lashes, but never just top lashes.
False Eyelashes on the Runway

At the Versace Spring 2009 show, models wore very feminine, neutral makeup. The false lashes made their eyes stand out for a doe-eyed, romantic look.

The models for the Yves Saint Laurent show were reminiscent of the 60′s look. Their false lashes were applied slanted up at the end. Then, the makeup artist heavily lined above the false lash. The result is very dramatic and definitely draws your attention to the eye.

False Eyelash Controversy

Both of these images are from makeup ads. The first is Penelope Cruz for L’Oreal. The second is Kate Moss for Rimmel. Both ads have received criticism since the celebrities are wearing fake lashes. Because the ads advertise mascara, critics think it’s unfair to imply your lashes will look the same simply by wearing the mascara advertised. L’Oreal’s defense was that wearing false lashes is common practice for makeup ads. Rimmel denied that Moss was wearing fakes, but pulled the ad rather than proving otherwise. What do you think? Is it fair or misleading to put models in fake lashes when you’re advertising mascara?
How To Wear Fake Lashes
Apply Last
Do all of your other makeup before applying lashes. This especially applies to your eye makeup. Though you will go back and apply more mascara and liner, you’ll not want to apply more eyeshadow because you’ll run the risk of disturbing the lashes. Make sure to have your eyeshadow exactly how you want it before applying your lashes.
Apply Eyeliner
Before adhering false lashes, apply a medium to thick line of eyeliner. This will help hide the base of the false lashes.
Wear Mascara
Apply a heavy layer of mascara to your real lashes before adhering false lashes. This will help the lashes blend together and adhere better.
Trim Lashes
You don’t have to wear the false lashes at the length they’re made. Using a small pair of scissors, trim the lashes to your desired length.
Apply Glue
Using your finger, run small beads of glue along your lash line. Do not apply directly to your lashes.
Allow the glue to become tacky.
Apply Lashes
Going from the inner to the outer corner or your eye, push down on the false lashes with a pair of tweezers. Try to get as close to your real lashes as possible.
Add More Liner
Once the lashes are intact, apply more eyeliner above the false lash line to blend and hide the base.
Add Mascara
To blend the false lashes with your real lashes, apply a light layer of mascara to your lashes.
When To Wear False Eyelashes
These days, pretty much anything goes! Depending on your job, you might not want to wear false lashes everyday. However, you might choose to wear them every night! False lashes are perfect for a special event, a concert, a party, a night out, a dinner date…you name it!

Shammie: You can wear the same pair again if you are careful to maintain the shape of your lashes and not get too much glue on them.
