Top 5 Colors for Spring 2010 Fashion

January 21st, 2010 by crystal
Top Spring 2010 Fashion Colors
What are the ‘in’ colors for Spring 2010? This, the color question, is the number one question I’m asked from season to season.

While most designers base their color choices on the Pantone report, it really takes getting into a season a bit to see what is actually going to take off with retailers and consumers. In this case, it looks like Pantone was pretty right on in their color forecast; turquoise is the color of choice this Spring.

Does that mean you should run out and buy a monochromatic turquoise wardrobe? Absolutely not!

Turquoise can be added to your wardrobe with accessories and pieces you already have. Or, you can buy one or two new bright pieces to liven up what you already have.

And, let’s not forget all of the other colors that are stylish this Spring. Choose the ones that you like best and run with those!

Here’s a rundown of the season’s most trendy colors. It’s what we saw on the Spring 2010 runways and what we’re seeing in retail stores now that Spring collections are being debuted.

Shades of Blue

Navy has always been associated with Spring. It’s the whole sailor thing, I’m sure. This Spring, that color has gotten a bit brighter with turquoise and what Pantone is calling ‘amparo’. Again, the inspiration is nautical. These blues are meant to prompt visions of beach vacations, blue skies and sparkling pools. Want something a little more classic? Navy is still a very stylish option.

Bright Pastels

Not quite neon, not quite pastel, bright pastels are the perfect way to brighten up your wardrobe and kiss those gray Winter skies goodbye. Similar to that bright blue shown above, bright yellows, corals and violets are sunny colors perfect for the warmer weather headed our way.

Neutrals

Subtle neutrals were perhaps the most popular shades on the runways for Spring 2010. Of course, the thing about neutrals is that they don’t jump out at you. That’s the beauty of their subtlety. With neutral shades, you are more prone to notice the designs of the pieces rather than the colors. It’s only when recapping the shows that you realize most of the pieces were nudes, grays, dusty pinks and beiges. Neutrals are super versatile and inherently feminine. They can be emboldened with bright accessories or kept subdued with other neutral shades.

Fire Shades

Bright poppies, flame reds and fire oranges are a bold choice for Spring 2010. With the exception of the super bright blue and turquoises, vivid fire shades were the only vibrant colors this Spring. Pair with neutrals to tone them down or wear fire shade accessories to add a pop of vivid color to the other muted shades of the season.

Black & White

While it’s ultra classic and never out of style, the black and white combination is exceptionally stylish this season. Go for a colorblock piece or a geometric design.

Thoughts?

Which of these colors is your personal favorite? Looking through lots of options as I was creating this post, I’ve discovered I am very drawn to the bright blues and am still a huge fan of navy. I might try some of the bright fire colors and maybe even some bright pastels. So, in short, I’ll probably be wearing all of these colors this Spring. Ha!
What about you?

Fashion Distraction :: Versace Spring 2010

January 19th, 2010 by crystal

Donatella Versace’s Spring 2010 collection was clearly designed for a youthful audience. Inspired by Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, many of the pieces featured fabric printed with clocks, playing cards and rabbits. Hemlines were shorter, colors were brighter, studs and embellishments adorned even the chiffon evening gowns and plastic was a choice fabric.

Perhaps because of her intended audience, Versace’s Spring 2010 line was remarkably lighter and airier than previous collections. Bright pastels, chiffons and sheers replaced the heavy blacks and grays of seasons past. Even the makeup was lighter. However, these details did not take away the edginess we’ve come to associate with Versace. Studs, chain mail and other metallic details kept the collection edgy and daring.

What’s Wearable?

The body-con styles, suits, prints and bright colors are all elements that can be taken from this collection and worn in real life.

What helps to define the season?

The rock style, sportiness, short hemlines and overall daring nature of the collection are resonant with other collections we’ve seen for Spring 2010.

Thoughts?

Though not my personal style, I’m fond of the short hemlines and the geometric prints in this collection.

2010 Jewelry Trend :: Vintage Inspired

January 19th, 2010 by crystal
Sparkly rhinestones, cut gems and huge brooches are reminiscent of your grandma’s 1960’s costume jewelry.

Jewelry Trends 2010
While you can totally get away with resurrecting the forgotten baubles in her jewelry box (and really, what’s more fun or meaningful than wearing your grandma or great-grandma’s costume jewelry?) or searching for finds at your favorite vintage store, the new versions being sold in retail stores are a bit different.

Whereas the 1960’s version of a cocktail necklace was most likely a short rhinestone or pearl strand, the recent statement necklace trend has influenced the 2010 version, giving us long strands, multi-strands and bib designs of rhinestones, pearls and cut gems.

Characteristics of the Vintage Inspired Jewelry Trend

Vintage Jewelry 2010
Ribbons: Though not so popular in the 1960’s, ribbons are being used with pearls, rhinestones and cut gems to gather multi-strand necklaces, serve in place of a necklace clasp and accent earrings and brooches.

Jewelry Trends 2010
Pearls: Pearls in various colors just scream vintage jewelry. In strands, ribbon-necklaces or in conjunction with other baubles, pearls are a popular component in this style.

Jewelry Trends 2010
Rhinestones: What’s more fun than rhinestone jewelry? Most of the rhinestones being used in this style are fairly large and are often interestingly shaped.

Jewelry Trend 2010
Cut Gems: Usually glass rather than gems, cut gems in pastels and smoky shades are key in vintage inspired jewelry.

Types of Vintage Inspired Jewelry

Chandelier Earrings

Vintage Jewelry 2010
By far the most popular of vintage inspired jewelry is chandelier earrings. Look for ones with largish stones in pastels and/or smoky colors.

Ribbon Necklaces

Vintage Jewelry 2010
Lately, necklaces made from pearls or colored gems are most often clasped with silk ribbons of similar colors. Ribbon necklaces are super feminine and can consist of one or many strands.

Thoughts?

A huge fan of this trend, I’ve been wearing some cherished pieces from my great-grandmother and my grandmother, my classic pearl necklace (though new, also a bit of a family heirloom) as well as some newly purchased pieces. It’s a fun way to look glamorous, classic and trendy all at the same time. And, every SINGLE time I wear one of my inherited rhinestone brooches, I get at least a few compliments. It’s fun stuff and such a great way to remember and honor my grandma and great-grandma.
