Fall 2009/Winter 2010 Coats :: Styles and Trends

Coats Fall 2009

It’s that time again! Time to bundle up in cute coats, scarves and mittens and brave the colder temperatures. Who says Winter coats have to be unattractive?

Here are the top 5 styles and the top 5 detail trends for Fall and Winter coats. With a variety like this, there’s something for everyone!

Fall 2009/Winter 2010 Coat Styles

Leather

The trend in leather outerwear is for jackets rather than coats, but leather jackets can be quite warm! Find a thick motorcycle jacket or a fashionable brown leather trench (black leather trenches are just a bit Matrix). When it comes to leather jackets, splurge and buy real leather since it’s warmer. Leather jackets will last a lifetime if conditioned occasionally, so choose a classic style (yes, there are classic motorcycle styles).

Colorful Trench

The trench is again popular this cold weather season. This Fall/Winter, brighten those dreary skies with a bright pop of color! A colorful trench coat is a versatile pick that works regardless of your personal style. Choose a bright color like hot pink, yellow, orange or green. Or, go truly Fall with a jewel-toned coat.
Be careful because trench coats can be quite thin. If you require a thick Winter coat, find a wool trench or a canvas coat that is lined.

Vintage/Retro Wool Coat

The most popular wool coat style this season draws inspiration from the jackets worn by Audrey Hepburn and Jackie Kennedy. Tall collars, modern cuts and slim lines make these coats feminine and sophisticated. So much so, you’ll want to plan your outfit around your coat!

Military Jackets

Like leather jackets, this trend is more a jacket than a coat. A lightweight military jacket is definitely a must-have this Fall! The style is so prolific, it has spilled over into coat styles as well. Military style coats are characterized by strong shoulders, structured lines and brass buttons.

Quilted Coats

A throw back to the styles of the 80’s, quilted coats remind me of the jackets I wore as a kid. Often filled with down, quilted coats are arguably the warmest coats you can buy. These are great to own if you live in a cold, snowy locale. Don’t worry, the styles in stores this season are far more stylish than the options of the 80’s. Find a quilted trench coat for a more fitted look. Or, choose a quilted coat that is tailored to avoid the doughboy look (though there are coats like that, too).

Fall 2009/Winter 2010 Coat Trends

These are the most prevalent trends for coats of all styles.

Fur

Fur Coats 2009
Cropped faux fur vests and coats are a great addition to an evening wear outfit. They’ll keep you toasty and you’ll look sexy-sophisticate as well.
Fur is also a popular embellishment. Find a quilted or trench coat with a fur collar, sleeves or hem detail.

Winter White

Winter White Coats 2009
White coats stand out in a crowd and offer a bright spot in the midst of the Winter doldrums. The problem with white coats–especially wool ones–is obvious…they get dirty quickly. So, scotchgard the bejesus out of that baby and worry no more.

High Collars

High collars are trendy on every style of coat this season. Not only do they add an extra layer of sophistication, they also keep you a tad bit warmer–especially when paired with a warm scarf.

Strong Shoulders

Coat Trends 2009
In keeping with the strong shoulders of the 80’s retro look, bold built-out shoulders are a popular trend for coats and jackets. Some shoulders are made strong with epaulettes while others are puffed out by pleating.

Plaid

Coat Trends 2009
Though the most popular plaid piece this Fall is the fitted flannel shirt, plaid is also quite trendy for coats. Be careful with this trend, though–it’s probably a fleeting fad.

Fall 2009 Makeup Trends

October 13th, 2009 by crystal
As we change our wardrobes with the seasons, let’s not forget about our makeup. Fall makeup typically gets darker and pinker as we lose our Summer tans, stash our bronzers for the season and mimic the jewel tones found in our clothing and the leaves on the changing trees. Every season, though, there are a few makeup trends that stand out above the rest. Here are the top makeup trends for Fall 2009 as seen on the runway.
Click on any of the photos to see a larger image.

Pink Cheeks

Fall 2009 Makeup Trends
As I mentioned above, it’s typical for makeup to get pinker during the Fall and Winter. Our faces lighten as we lose our Summer tans and bronzers begin to take on an orange look instead of the sun-kissed appearance they’re intended to portray. This season, pink blushes take on a whole new hue. Bright pink, rosy cheeks mimic a wind-burned look. To attain this look, find a blush that mimics the shade of your cheeks after you’ve exercised.
I recommend: Bobbi Brown’s Pale Pink Blush

Natural Face

Fall 2009 Makeup Trends
Natural looks are always in–this Fall is no exception. The trick is to create a flawless look without the appearance of having any makeup on at all. Unless you are blessed with even-toned, flawless skin, achieving this can be trickier than it sounds. For a step-by-step guide, visit Ssasy Chic’s guide to ‘barely-there’ makeup.

Bold Lips

Fall 2009 Makeup Trends

Very vintage, bold lips in berry tones and true red make your look stand out from the rest. With bold lips, keep the rest of the makeup subdued to avoid looking overly made up. Find a berry tone that takes your natural lip color a shade or two darker. If you dare to try true red lips, visit Ssasy Chic’s guide to wearing red lipstick.

Natural Eyebrows

Fall 2009 Makeup Trends
Natural, full eyebrows are not just an addition to the natural face look. Full, often exaggerated eyebrows were seen with almost every makeup style on the runway. The full and natural brows have replaced the super thin, structured look we are so used to. This doesn’t mean we should put our tweezers away and let our eyebrows grow wild. Creating a mussed, but neat eyebrow still requires taming.
Allowing your eyebrows to resort to their natural shape might be a painful in-between process. Trim and structure around the brows to prevent them from getting too out of hand. Use an eyeshadow the shade of your brows to fill in and exaggerate their fullness.

Metallic Eyes

Fall 2009 Makeup Trends
Metallic eyeshadows are a super fun way to move your look from daytime to nighttime. Choose a metallic eyeshadow in a shade similar to what you wear during the day. Then, before you go out, add the metallic shadow over what you are already wearing. Create a contoured look by brushing into the crease. Or, brush metallic shadow over the whole lid.
Metallic eyeshadows can also be worn during the day if you choose a sheer or neutral colored shadow.
I recommend: Bobbi Brown’s Metallic Cream Shadow and Shimmer Wash Eyeshadow.

80’s Style

Fall 2009 Makeup Trends
With all the 80’s fashion that has taken center stage this season, it makes sense 80’s makeup is trendy as well. To get a very 80’s look, use two bright colors side by side or as your lid and contour color.

Soft, Smoky Eyes

Fall 2009 Makeup Trends
The smoky eye was first popular just in the gray/black variety. Now, smoky eyes in jewel tones, browns and lighter grays have made this style a versatile must-wear for Fall. To learn how to create a soft smoky eye, read Ssasy Chic’s guide to the soft, smoky eye.

Your Thoughts?

Which of these trends will you be wearing this Fall?

Fashion Distraction :: Vivienne Tam Spring 2010

October 12th, 2009 by crystal
Vivienne Tam Spring 2010

Vivienne Tam’s Spring 2010 collection was all about butterflies. Drawing inspiration from the Chinese opera ‘Butterfly Lovers’, each outfit worked around a central accessory–the HP digital clutch Tam designed.

The butterfly theme prevailed in a variety of ways. Satin and chiffon pieces featured over-sized butterfly prints in color and black and white. Embroidered butterflies provided the structure for skirts and dresses. Sequined butterflies embellished dresses and tops. And, the general structure of the pieces Tam designed were flowing and light, like butterflies. In short, butterflies were everywhere!

While the butterfly theme was fanciful and unique, the best designs weren’t focused on butterflies at all. Fitted blazers, tailored jeans and structured cocktail dresses were the most wearable of all Tam’s designs.

In addition, the general feel was 1970’s throwback. Over-sized fringe bags, maxi-dresses and gladiator sandals provided a hippie-chic feel. The only reminder of our current decade was the digital clutch most of the models carried down the runway.

What can we take away?

From Vivienne Tam’s collection, we can tell the boho/hippie-chic look will definitely be stylish again next Spring. Hip-hugging boot-cut jeans paired with fitted tops are a great sophisticated vintage look. And, unlike the sleek and sporty looks we’ve seen from other shows, flowy, feminine styles will still be a stylish option.

Your thoughts?

How wearable do you think the butterfly designs are? Is this a collection you could wear or just draw inspiration from?
