Spa Deals

September 30th, 2009 by crystal

For those of you who don’t know, I’m in Mexico this week. Internet is much spottier than I thought it would be, so I’m keeping posts short and simple. {Besides, I’m spending the majority of my time soaking up as much of this paradise as I possibly can!}

If you haven’t heard about Spa Week, you should check this out. In addition to the actual week where you can obtain $50 spa services at a number of spas, you can also get deep discounts on a day to day basis. Just search for your city to see what spas in your area are offering. There’s only one near me, but the deal is pretty amazing!

Okay…back to the beach.

Fashion Distraction :: Charlotte Ronson Spring 2010

September 28th, 2009 by crystal
Charlotte Ronson Spring 2010

Charlotte Ronson’s Spring 2010 show was all 80’s ballerina. Mesh leggings under skirts, bodysuits, jumpsuits, built-out shoulders, bare shoulders, top knots and braided headbands were reminiscent of Flashdance, Footloose and Dirty Dancing.

Charlotte Ronson made this look slightly edgy with the addition of leather, studs and obi belts. While it was a fun line, it was border-line costume attire. Were you to don looks like those the models wore down the runway, you’d run the risk of looking like you were on your way to an 80’s costume party.

Of course, any of these pieces could be muted if worn separately or toned down with different accessories or pairings. What we can take away from Charlotte Ronson’s collection is the focus on the soft, artistic side of the 80’s and the mix of edgy accessories with the soft tulle of the ballet look.

Key Trends from the Spring 2010 Charlotte Ronson Collection

bare shoulders
leggings under skirts
sheer
acid wash denim
studs
obi belts
khaki
built-out shoulders
bodysuits (no pants)
skinny jeans
plaid shirts
lace
jumpsuits
one-shoulder

What do you think?

Good, bad, just so so? Are you a fan of the 80’s ballerina look? Would you go all-out or only implement certain pieces?

Can Tall Girls Wear Heels?

September 24th, 2009 by crystal

Can Tall Girls Wear Heels?
I’m ridiculously tall. Especially when I wear heels.

When I walk into a room, people turn and stare. Little kids always look up at me in awe and tell their moms, ’she’s big’. People are constantly telling me, ‘you’re so tall’. Yeah. Thank you Mr. Obvious.

And, there are always the questions.
‘Why are you so tall?’ ummm….
‘How’d you get so tall?’ I grew.
‘Did you play basketball?’ Did you play mini-golf?
‘You should model.’ umm…thanks, I think

Being tall as a teenager was a pain in my as-high-as-your-head butt. Don’t ask me why, but long jeans were hard to find then. I wore men’s jeans or jeans that were 2 inches shorter than I really needed them to be (the longest inseams then were 34″…I wear a 36/37″).

And, I just felt like I towered over everyone. Because I did. Needless to say, I didn’t like to make myself any taller than necessary. I rarely wore heels because I didn’t like to be taller than the boys.

Being tall is not all it’s cracked up to be. You get stared at. Girls hate you because you get stared at. You try to hide because you get stared at. You can’t shop for jeans in stores (this is true even now–I have to order online). Nothing fits the way magazines make it seem clothes should. You feel huge even if you’re thin. You get called ‘mama long legs’. It’s pretty isolating.

Yeah, I know…boo hoo. I should feel blessed for being so tall. And, as I’ve gotten older, I do. I’ve learned to feel comfortable in my body. I’ve learned to smile at the kids who think I’m a giant. I’ve learned to wittily respond when people ask such obvious questions. I’ve learned how to shop for my uber long legs and not cry every time I see super cute, trendy pants that come in only one length. And, I’ve learned to wear heels…scratch that…I’ve fallen in love with wearing heels.

In fact, I prefer wearing heels. Even when I was a teacher, I’d wear 3 inch heels all day. (Believe me, there’s nothing more intimidating to an 8 year old than a 12 foot tall teacher.) When I wear heels, I feel all dressed up. I feel put together, sophisticated and feminine.

So, can tall girls wear heels?

I hear this all the time, ‘You’re wearing 4 inch heels? That just shouldn’t be allowed.’
But, seriously, why should tall girls be denied the amazing, leg-lengthening effects of a sexy pair of heels? Why should tall girls not feel put together, sophisticated and feminine?

It’s true it makes us taller. It’s true we tower over you even more. Deal with it. It’s nothing personal. We just want to wear the same cute shoes you get to wear.

So, if you’re a ridiculously tall girl who’s stayed away from 4 inch heels, stay away no longer tall sister! Go for it! Buy that pair of sky high stilettos, tower over your man (and everyone else) and LOVE it!
