Spring 2009 Trend: Feathers

March 31st, 2009 by crystal
A little bit flapper, a little bit showgirl, feathers are a great way to have fun with your look this Spring. Feathers can be worn in a variety of ways–as accessories, printed on clothing, added as accents or completely covering your garment. Though they were definitely displayed on the Spring 2009 runways, those looks were not as accessible for everyday wear. Instead, feathers have begun appearing in the form of hair accessories, earrings and graphic prints. Read more for different ways to wear the feather trend, inspiration and examples of pieces in stores now.

Ways to Wear Feathers this Spring

Feather Jewelry

You can find feathers on pretty much any type of jewelry. Designers are using feathers on earrings, bracelets and necklaces in a variety of ways. Some designs are quite structured and add other materials such as metal. Others just feature the feather itself. And, some designs use no feather at all. Metal earrings in the shape of feathers are a great example of this.

Feather Hair Accessories

Feather barrettes, headbands and clips are appearing in tons of trendy stores. The designs of these pieces vary from structured and vintage looking to free-form and bohemian looking. Urban Outfitters has perhaps the largest selection of feather hair accessories. They call many of their pieces ‘fascinators’ after the elaborate hair pieces worn to weddings and horse races in the UK.

Feather Clothing

Feathers are also being used to adorn clothing. Most pieces use feathers as a hem or neck line, but some feature feathers all over the piece.

Monday Fashion Spot: Max Azria Fall 2009

March 30th, 2009 by crystal
The Fall 2009 Max Azria collection is incredibly dynamic. Combining many different styles, it effortlessly bridged the gap between edgy and feminine. Almost all of the outfits were layered on top of a sheer black turtleneck and opaque black tights. This was the foundation for each look, making the evening gowns more approachable and the structured bondage pieces less gothic.
Though inspired by the ’seduction of the dark side’, the Azrias were also quite interested in the femininity of lace.
Most of the looks were black, but some featured rich plums and golds.
Draping made the more ephemeral pieces look a bit haphazard, but still quite elegant.

Themes from the Max Azria show:
built-out shoulders
black
dropped waists
asymmetrical designs
lace
turtlenecks
leggings
draping
rich, jewel tones

Market Publique: An Online Vintage Market

March 25th, 2009 by crystal

Market Publique launched their site earlier this month and it’s already going strong! Elegantly designed and super easy to navigate, this site is a great alternative to previous methods of vintage shopping.
Many online vintage sellers who were previously using Ebay have transferred their wares over to Market Publique’s site. So, what is it and why is it so great? Read on to learn more about this amazing new site.

What is Market Publique?

Market Publique is an online space for buyers and sellers of vintage clothing to meet and do business.
The founders started the site because they realized there was a lack of online options for buyers and sellers of vintage clothing. They sought to create a community of vintage enthusiasts who would buy, sell and discuss quality, authentic vintage clothing.

How does Market Publique Work?

Sellers who register with Market Publique display their products on the site. Instead of having to shop by store or seller, buyers can shop by category. So, if you’re looking for a dress, you’ll see all of the dresses listed from all of the sellers. Most of the pieces are sold through a bidding process. Some sellers offer a ‘grab it’ price in addition to or instead of bidding.

Why use Market Publique?

For Buyers

Buying vintage clothing is fun, but can also be time-consuming and frustrating. It’s not rare to visit multiple shops before finding a quality, authentic item that actually fits. This is especially true if you are not an average size. And, buying vintage online wasn’t a great alternative before Market Publique. Sellers on Ebay were not always honest about the authenticity of their pieces. And, sizing was an issue. Listing a 1920’s dress as a size 4 doesn’t translate to a modern size 4. Market Publique only uses trusted sellers. Sellers have to apply to list their items on the website and can be kicked off if they are not trustworthy. The issue with sizing is mitigated because sellers offer measurements for each of the pieces.
Pieces are added quite often, making Market Publique a new daily obsession for me.

For Sellers

You don’t have to own a vintage store or have an existing online presence to sell on Market Publique. Anyone can apply to sell. The seller fees are much lower than Ebay’s, making it a more lucrative option. Market Publique is quickly building a reputation for quality that will make customers more likely to purchase listed items. They are also building a community centered on vintage clothing.

Spring 2009 Makeup Trend: Heavy Eyeliner

March 24th, 2009 by crystal
Heavy Eyeliner has been slowly making a come back for a few seasons now. This season, it’s definitely arrived! Allure is calling it the top beauty trend of Spring 2009.
Heavy Eyeliner can be a tricky look to pull off. Done incorrectly, your makeup can look overdone and your eyes can look tired and small. Heavy Eyeliner should draw attention to your eyes and make them the focal point of your face. To achieve the look successfully, read more to find some inspiration from the runway and celebrities, learn how to apply and find which product will work for you.

Heavy Eyeliner On the Runway

Heavy Eyeliner Spring 2009
Models for the Narciso Rodriguez show wore thick lines of liner around the entire eye. Notice the liner meets at both corners of the eye.
Heavy Eyeliner Spring 2009
The Lanvin models wore eyeliner quite dramatically. The theme of the show was ‘broken couture’, so the liner was intentionally messy. No liner was applied under the eye. A thick line was drawn above the lashes, getting thicker toward the corner of the eye and extending past the corner about an eye’s width.
Heavy Eyeliner Spring 2009
The makeup for the Gucci show paired bright eyeshadow with heavy liner for a very dramatic draw to the eye. The liner was thick all around the eye, meeting at both corners. It was also smudged a bit above the eye and into the shadow.

Celebrities wearing Heavy Eyeliner

How to Wear Heavy Eyeliner
Debra Messing’s eyeliner application is fairly simple in that it’s basically just a thick line all the way around the eye. The liner meets at each corner and the rest of the makeup was kept fairly neutral.
How to Wear Heavy Eyeliner
Drew Barrymore’s Golden Globe style shows her wearing heavy eyeliner on her top lid only. Her liner starts at the inner corner and remains thick slightly past the outer corner. Again, the rest of her makeup was kept neutral and subdued to draw attention to the eyes.
How to Wear Heavy Eyeliner
Angelina Jolie’s heavy eyeliner takes the winged approach. Starting at the inner corner, it gets thicker as it approaches the outer corner, flares up about half of an eye’s width past the outer corner and meets the thinner line coming from the lower lash.

How To Wear Heavy Eyeliner

Steps for any look

1. Begin with a clean face.
2. Conceal under eye circles. Apply concealer to the upper lids if you have discoloration or want your makeup to last longer.
3. Apply foundation.
4. If you’re going to wear shadow, apply it before you apply your eyeliner.
5. If you’re going for a neutral look, you might apply a cream or nude shadow to the lids to make your look more polished and complete. Make sure the shadow is blended well so it doesn’t leave a shadow line.
6. Follow your liner with heavy mascara.
7. Keep your cheeks and lips neutral. Peach blush or bronzer is a good option. For lips, go with a neutral shade of lipgloss.

The Winged Look

To achieve the winged look, begin at the inner corner of the upper lid. Apply a line of eyeliner that gets thicker as you approach the outer corner. Swoop the line slightly up past the outer corner of the eye. Beginning at the center of the eye, apply eyeliner to the lower lid until it meets the eyeliner on the upper lid.

All Around the Eye

To apply eyeliner all around the eye, begin at the inner corner of the upper lid. Line to the outer corner, taking the line just slightly past the corner of the eye. Do the same with the bottom lid, meeting both lines in the corners. You might try lining the inner lid as well to prevent a ‘line’ look.

Only The Top Lash

Many of the looks this Spring focus only on the top lash. Make sure the under eye area is well concealed and powdered to maintain a clean, clear line. Beginning at the inner edge of the eye, line the top lid with a line that gets progressively thicker as you approach the outer corner of the lid. Take the line slightly past the corner and slightly up.

Only The Bottom Lash

Though I didn’t show any images of this look, it is one I’ve seen being worn out and about. The look is a bit tricky to pull off because it can make the eyes look heavy and tired. You’ll have to decide if this is a good look for you or not. Start with a well concealed eye area. Apply a thick line of eyeliner along the bottom lash. Keep the top lid simple with a nude or cream shadow that is well blended.

Tips For Every Look

If you’re lining the top and bottom lash lines, make sure the lines meet at the corners.
Blend the liner into the lash to prevent your eyeliner from looking like a stark line.

Monday Fashion Spot: Matthew Williamson Fall 2009

March 23rd, 2009 by crystal
The recession did not mute Matthew Williamson’s style. His designs for Fall 2009 were as bright and embellished as they usually are. Where we’ve seen neutrals, blacks and jewel tones from other designers, Williamson’s palette offered the same but with pops of neon-like accents.
Fur was a huge player in his outfits. He went for oversized cocoon coats and enormously fluffy scarves in patterned and colored furs.
Pieces were also embellished with intricate bead-work and metallic materials. It will be really easy, and somewhat necessary, to keep accessories to a minimum with these designs.

Matthew Williamson for H&M

Can’t wait until next Fall and/or want a cheaper version of Matthew Williamson’s amazing designs? His line for H&M comes out at the end of April and is fantastic! There are some very colorful pieces in his typical bohemian style. He’s also designed an amazing blue suit similar to one from his Spring 2009 line. Many of his H&M pieces have peacock accents which are proving to be very popular this season.
Here are a few preview images of what will be offered.
