Lancome and Estee Lauder have begun a beauty revolution that some are referring to as the ‘mascara wars’. Both have released vibrating battery-powered mascaras that are said to leave your lashes fuller and more separated. Problem is, they both sold out immediately and will not be restocked for another couple of months. What’s a girl to do?
Lancome Oscillation Mascara
Lancome released its battery-powered mascara July 31st. Within one day, all 5,000 released mascaras were sold out! Lancome says Oscillation will not be available again until November. You can, however, put your name on a waiting list to be notified when the new release becomes available.
The Lancome Oscillation features 7,000 ‘micro-oscillations’ (aka vibrations) per minute and can be purchased for $34.
Estee Lauder TurboLash Mascara
Estee Lauder released their battery-powered mascara, TurboLash, about 2 weeks before Lancome’s. The entire online stock sold out the night before the store release. More will be released later this fall. You can register on the website to be notified when more are available. I don’t think this is an official ‘waiting list’, but certain stores may have unofficial waiting lists of their own.
TurboLash features 7500 vibrations per minute and retails for $30.
Spinlash Mascara
So, if you are dying to try a battery-powered mascara and just can’t wait until November, Spinlash is your answer. Spinlash is an ‘as seen on TV’ product that can be found at stores like Target, CVS, etc. The cost is about $15. Spinlash works differently than the two mascaras listed above. The Spinlash wand rotates instead of vibrating to separate lashes. One cool thing about Spinlash is that the wand itself can be used with your regular mascara.

Hillary was the headline speaker at the Democratic National Convention Tuesday night. Her speech was multi-faceted, but centered on a general theme: Democrats must come together in unity and elect Barack Obama. She spoke specifically about her own campaign and the memories she has from that time. As she was listing the people she met during her campaign and the issues they faced, I wondered how she was going to link back to supporting Obama considering she opposed him during that time. But, she did so beautifully. After listing many reasons why she ran for President, she said, “Those are the reasons I ran for President. Those are the reasons I support Barack Obama. And those are the reasons you should too.” Hillary also spoke directly about why McCain is not the man her supporters should support. She took the Obama approach of linking him with Bush and showing that he is out of touch with the plights of the common man. She supported these claims by giving specific examples of McCain’s stances on important issues. “John McCain says the economy is fundamentally sound. John McCain doesn’t think that 47 million people without health insurance is a crisis. John McCain wants to privatize Social Security. And in 2008, he still thinks it’s okay when women don’t earn equal pay for equal work.” She rounded out her speech by recalling the suffragette movement (it’s the anniversary this week and has been a common theme of this convention) and the mantra of Harriet Tubman, urging citizens to remember the past and make sure that “…the choice we make in this election honors the sacrifices of all who came before us, and will fill the lives of our children with possibility and hope.” Check out a full-text version of her speech here. Or, see the video here.
What do you think? Did Hillary’s speech do much to further Obama’s campaign?
Sold exclusively at Kohl’s, the Elle Contemporary Collection contains some inexpensive pieces that will keep your wardrobe in style for the fall season. The designer, Alia, is a Style Editor for Elle Magazine. So, she covers runway shows for Elle and gets to see first-hand what’s hot for the season. Then, she takes that knowledge and creates pieces that are both fashionable and affordable for Kohl’s. Check out the lookbook on the Kohl’s website. This is updated each month with new looks. In each lookbook, a few outfits are put together to give an example of how to wear the individual pieces. Also, one particular piece is showcased to show how it can be worn three different ways (like for weekend, evening, and work). Though the collection is pretty limited and some of the pieces seem a little less than stylish, it’s definitely worth browsing.
Here are some of the more worthy pieces:
Beginning with kilts worn in Scotland and England, plaid has a long history. It became fashion worthy as early as the early 1900s when the New York Times acknowledged it as a fashionable fabric to use, but said it was best worn on a pleated skirt. Plaid has long been used as a staple in school uniforms. And, as we all remember, it became wildly popular during the 90’s grunge era. Of course flannels flaunted the design. But, there was also the spin on the prim schoolgirl look…the ultra short, pleated plaid skirt with tears and pins. Yeah, we remember. Plaid has remained as a constant in the fashion scene, used on almost every type of clothing and for many different styles. However, based on the runway shows for this fall’s collections, plaid is not just another fabric for the season–it’s a must-have.
Here’s a run down on Plaid for this fall:
On the Runway

With such a variety of designs and styles to choose from, many celebrities, including Vanessa Hudges, are choosing plaid pieces.

Really?! So, I know he eats something like 20,000 calories a day and doesn’t have to watch what he eats, but come on!! What kind of a message is this sending kiddos? “Eat Frosted Flakes and you’ll be like Michael Phelps”? Yeah, right! Whatever happened to eating your Wheaties? I’m sure he’s getting paid a ton for the ad, but he definitely has the opportunity to negotiate with companies and products that might actually benefit the common man. Details here.

Garden
Plant Now: Zinnias
Zinnias add tons of color to your garden! They are fairly drought-resistant and easy to care for. Buy plants from your local nursery and plant in a spot that gets full sun. Make sure the soil stays somewhat moist. In average temperatures, Zinnias need to be watered every few days. Dead head spent blossoms and spread the seeds around your garden. Chances are, those seeds will volunteer for you in the spring.
Fitness
Squats
Want to tone the backs of your legs and your butt? Try this exercise… At Home:Try this first with no weights. Standing with your legs shoulder width apart, lower into a squatting position. Do not let your knees go over your toes. Make sure your butt is sticking out and your back is arched. This should not hurt your back. You should feel the exercise in your butt and thighs. Do as many reps as you can. Once this feels natural, you can add dumbbells for resistance. At the Gym:At the gym, you have the opportunity to add more resistance and get more from this exercise. Start by using the barbell with no added weights. Position the bar over the tops of your shoulders with your hands holding the bar to keep it balanced. Follow the same routine as for ‘at home’ except do 12 reps each for 3 sets. Once this feels normal, add weights. Make sure you have your form correct! wikiHow has great step-by-step directions.
